1. ‘Three-ring circus’: Changes keep coming at NAILE

Recently, the North American International Livestock Exposition has been in the spotlight for major, unexpected changes in its leadership. On Aug. 14, a new executive director of expositions was hired, leaving some people to question what will happen to this year’s show that is slated for November.

2. Case Farms faces $861K in fines

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has found Case Farms Processing Inc., which has facilities in Canton, Massillon, Strasburg and Winesburg, Ohio, in violation of numerous health and safety standards.

OSHA found the company to be in violation of numerous health and safety violations, resulting in 68 citations and $861,500 in penalties. Those citations include amputation hazards, lack of personal protection, violations of electrical safety standards and lack of emergency eye-wash stations.

3. The self-sufficient gardener: How to save seed

Saving seed saves time, money and leads to self-sufficiency. Farm and Dairy online columnist Ivory Harlow explains which seeds should be saved and which ones shouldn’t. Saving seeds is different for each plant, but she gives an overview of what to look for when saving seeds from a variety of vegetables.

Harlow also offers step-by-step instructions for testing seed germination before planting your saved seeds.

4. Ashtabula County Fair 2015

See photos and results from this year’s Ashtabula County Fair sale, held Aug. 15. The sale featured 278 lots and netted a total of $317,454.87.

5. Butler County junior livestock sale results posted

The Butler County (Pa.) junior livestock sale, held Aug. 13, totaled $230,570.15 in 234 lots. Be sure to check out the photo gallery of the sale’s champions.
