Woodlot workshops cover process of making lumber, selling timber

COLUMBUS – How a tree becomes lumber, from growing to cutting to drying to grading, is the focus of Lumber From Your Woodlot, a workshop by the Ohio Woodland Stewards Program Nov. 12 in Knox County.

The class runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the 4-H Camp Ohio Activities Center, 11461 Camp Ohio Rd., St. Louisville.

It will give participants information on trees and the process that converts them into workable wood.

During indoor and outdoor sessions, participants will learn about tree, log and lumber grades; how to grow quality timber; how to care for lumber once it’s cut; air and kiln drying; and the basics of wood and tree identification.

Selling timber workshop. Thinking about selling timber? A second Ohio workshop, Selling Timber? Consider This, is Nov. 13, from 7-9 p.m., in Union County.

It offers participants detailed information on financial returns, how to mark boundaries, maximizing a timber investment, harvesting and reproduction methods.

The seminar will be held at the Allen Township Hall, 16945 Allen Center Rd., Marysville.
