Wellness Wednesday at Salem Public Library will take place on March 9, 2016 beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a program about Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) to be presented by Cynthia Yamokoski, Ph.D. supervisory psychologist and lead for the posttraumatic stress disorder programs at Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. The National Institute of Mental Health defines PTSD as a disorder that develops in some people who have seen or lived through a shocking, scary, or dangerous event. Through her presentation, Dr. Yamokoski gives us the opportunity to increase our knowledge and understanding of the complexity of the disorder, its assessment and treatment.
Dr. Yamokoski graduated with her Ph.D. from the APA-accredited Counseling Psychology program at the University of Akron in 2006 after completing an APA-accredited internship at the Dayton VA Medical Center. Dr. Yamokoski’s clinical specialization is in PTSD treatment and assessment, the interactions of PTSD and substance use, combat guilt, and suicidal thoughts/behaviors. She has published peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on suicide, training practices, self-care, cultural competency and coordination with pastoral care. She assists in training interns and postdoctoral residents in PTSD, and has participated in several national workgroup aimed to improve treatment of Veterans with PTSD within the VA system.
