LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Comparison shopping and taking advantage of multiple policy discounts are among the ways to save on an important household risk management tool: insurance.

“Insurance is important for financial security,” said Laura Connerly, assistant professor for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “Without it, one accident can destroy your most valuable assets.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, homeowners spent more than $1,600 a year on insurance, repairs and maintenance.

According to Insure.com, Americans spend between $1,200-$1,900 a year on car insurance, depending on the age of the driver.

Ways to save

Connerly offers five ways to save money on insurance:

Check rates before you buy a home or car. Insurance will vary on new and used cars and on different models of cars and on different houses. Some homes may require flood insurance. So you might want to think about this as you are making purchasing decisions.

Compare agencies and policies. Comparison about every three years. Remember to make sure that you are comparing policies with the same types of coverage when you check prices. Higher deductibles correspond with lower premiums.

Use one agency

Most agencies offer a discount if you have multiple policies with them.

Ask about discounts

There may be additional discounts available. Teen and young adult drivers can usually receive discounts for good grades and for taking a driver’s education course.

Drive safely

Insurance rates usually increase when you have a traffic violation. Stay safe and keep your insurance rates low by following traffic laws and by being a cautious driver.
