Spiced Apple Cake

Ingredients:

  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. ground cloves
  • ½ tsp. ground nutmeg
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 2 firm apples, peeled, sliced thin

Ingredients for Caramel Sauce:

  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a 9-by-9-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time. Stir in sour cream. Fold in the dry mixture until combined.
  4. Spread batter evenly into the prepared pan. Arrange apple slices on top of the batter.
  5. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. While the cake bakes, make a caramel sauce by melting granulated sugar in a saucepan over low heat until golden. Once melted, stir in heavy cream and butter, whisking until smooth.
  7. Let the cake cool slightly before drizzling with warm sauce.
