Ingredients:
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp. ground cloves
- ½ tsp. ground nutmeg
- ½ tsp. salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup sour cream
- 2 firm apples, peeled, sliced thin
Ingredients for Caramel Sauce:
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup heavy cream
- ¼ cup unsalted butter
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a 9-by-9-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and salt.
- In another bowl, beat butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time. Stir in sour cream. Fold in the dry mixture until combined.
- Spread batter evenly into the prepared pan. Arrange apple slices on top of the batter.
- Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
- While the cake bakes, make a caramel sauce by melting granulated sugar in a saucepan over low heat until golden. Once melted, stir in heavy cream and butter, whisking until smooth.
- Let the cake cool slightly before drizzling with warm sauce.
