Chardon High School earns fourth place at 2012 Canon Envirothon

COLUMBUS — A five-member team of students from Chardon High School in Chardon, Ohio, has earned a fourth place finish out of 54 teams at the 2012 Canon Envirothon.

This event is a week-long environmental education competition sponsored by Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions. The winning team was announced July 26 during the closing ceremonies at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa.

Teams from across 44 states, nine Canadian provinces and one Canadian territory completed training and testing in natural resource categories such as forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology and soils and land use.

Topic

Every year an additional topic is incorporated into the competition based upon a current environmental issue. This year’s topic was: Nonpoint Source Pollution/Low Impact Development. At stake for each team was a share of $120,000 in scholarships and Canon products.

Winning teams were selected based on points earned from hands-on field-testing, written tests and oral presentations. The first-place team was Pembroke High School from Kansas City, Mo., and they received a total of $25,000 in Canon scholarships.

West Hill Secondary School from Owen Sound, Ontario, received $20,000, and Enloe High School from Raleigh, N.C. received $15,000, and placed second and third, respectively.

Fourth place team, Chardon High School, received $10,000, and the fifth place team, the Mount Academy from Orange County, N.Y., received $7,500.

  1. Very nice story on Envirothon! But you used an old photo. That team competed four years ago. Too bad you didn’t have this years picture, it was a good one.

  2. Thanks, Mary, for bringing that to our attention. We had the correct photo in the print version (Aug. 9 issue), but when the story was uploaded, the older photo was used. Our apologies and we’re correcting it even as I type!
