National Katahdin Association welcomes all shepherds to Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio — Katahdin Hair Sheep International (KHSI) and the Ohio Heartland Sheep Improvement Association are hosting the 2012 KHSI Expo in Wooster, Ohio, Aug. 10-11.

Everyone is welcome

Sheep raisers of all breeds, friends and families are invited to register for a special day-long educational program Aug. 10 that will feature nationally recognized presenters.

An evening social, Aug. 10, will provide additional opportunities to meet Katahdin shepherds from around the U.S. and Canada and to view Katahdins from top breeders.

National sheep sale

The highlight Aug. 11 will be the National Katahdin Sheep Sale which will include registered rams and ewes as well as pens of commercial ewes.

There will be educational sessions Aug. 10 which will take place at the Shisler Conference Center which is located at Ohio State University’s Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster.

Speakers

Several speakers from Ohio will give presentations on carcass evaluation, ruminant nutrition, parasite resistance and meat cutting and cooking.

Researchers from Virginia and Arkansas will speak about selecting sheep genetics plus more discussion of parasite management and selection for resistance. The diverse speakers and topics put together by organizers will offer valuable information for both new and experienced shepherds who raise any breed.

Learning from others

The program will also feature a youth skillathon, an entertaining way to demonstrate sheep knowledge and learn from other youth.

To close the evening, everyone is invited to the Wayne County Fairgrounds on the edge of downtown Wooster, for an ice cream social and to view the sale animals.

Registration fee

There is a registration fee for the Aug. 10 program which includes the full day event, two meals and materials. The 2012 National Katahdin Expo Sheep Sale will begin at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 11 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds.

Registered Katahdins rams and ewes, and also lots of three-five commercial ewes will be offered at the sale. All events on Aug. 11 are free and open to the public. A display of sale Katahdins by class will precede the sale.
