A roundup of FFA news for the week of Nov. 20, 2008

CASTALIA, Ohio — The Margaretta FFA Chapter would like to congratulate Derrick Jacobs who recently received a $500 scholarship.

Jacobs received this award for his outstanding accomplishments in a poultry judging contest in Indianapolis.

The poultry team placed fourth in the nation for their ability to judge poultry.

Team members were Kory Munk, Derrick Jacobs, Brooke McIntire and Katie Orshoski.

Jacobs received sixth individually overall along with a gold emblem. Munk and McIntire also received a gold emblem.

Orshoski rounded out the team with a silver emblem.

The team one of 38 teams participating in the 2008 National FFA Poultry Evaluation Career Development Event Oct. 22-25 during the 81st National FFA Convention.

Margaretta’s officer team met Nov. 7 at 7 a.m. at the Cold Creek Cafe. Eight officers and one advisor were present.

Officers discussed the idea of holding a pork chop dinner before a home basketball game. The officers also discussed holding a staff breakfast during National Education Week.

Officers planned out an agenda for the chapter meeting that was held Nov. 10. Officers also talked about the sweatshirt and T-shirt designs that were recently ordered.

The chapter met Nov. 10, with President David Siesel calling the meeting to order, and officers holding opening ceremonies.

A treasurer’s report was given by Ashley Sartor and a news article was then read by Megan Miller. Secretary Kory Munk read the minutes from the previous meeting.

Multiple committee reports were given, and new business was discussed.
A motion was passed for the chapter to go to a paintball field.

The chapter also moved to hold a pork chop dinner. The motion was passed and was referred to the fundraising and community service committees.

The chapter also voted on holding a staff breakfast during National Education Week. The motion was referred to the community service committee to plan more details.

OBERLIN, Ohio — The Firelands FFA Chapter participates in many Career Development Events each year. Recently, the chapter went to forestry and soils events.

The chapter traveled to Bellville to compete in the forestry event. Here they listened to Richland County naturalists during a presentation about trees and forests.

The students placed second in the district and received a district plaque.

At the Rural Soil Career Development Event, team members placed in the following order: Tom Krumwiede, Amy Sayler, Rachel Krumwiede, Shelby Balint, Andy Butler, Corey Baumann and Jimmy Hozalski.

Firelands FFA soil team won county soils in Wellington this year, and the team went to district soils in LaGrange where they placed ninth out of 20 teams.

At districts, Krumwiede had team high score, Butler was second, followed by Balint.
