Extension will offer fall prevention program

CANFIELD, Ohio – Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, but they don’t have to be an inevitable part of aging. Ohio State University Extension Mahoning County is offering A Matter of Balance, an award-winning program designed to help older adults reduce their fear of falling, improve balance, and remain active and independent.

The eight-week series will be held Wednesdays, from Sept. 9 through Oct. 28, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the OSU Extension Office, 490 S. Broad Street, Canfield.

During the course, participants will learn to: view falls as controllable rather than an inevitable part of aging; set realistic goals for increasing physical activity; identify and reduce fall hazards in and around the home; improve strength, flexibility and balance through simple exercises.

Classes meet once a week for two hours over the eight-week program. The registration fee is $10 per participant for the entire series and includes all program materials.

“A Matter of Balance” is ideal for older adults who have concerns about falling, have experienced a fall in the past, or have reduced their activities because of a fear of falling.

Advance registration is required.

To register, visit go.osu.edu/matterofbalancefall26 or call the OSU Extension Mahoning County Office at 330-533-5538.
