Learn to grow giant pumpkins

SALEM, Ohio — The Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers will hold its giant pumpkin growing seminar from 1-4 p.m. Feb. 14 at the Millcreek Metro Parks McMahon Hall (one mile south of Canfield, Ohio, Route 46 across from the Canfield Fairgrounds).

Registration

To register call Parks Garden Center at 330- 533-7278. There is no charge to attend the seminar. Giant pumpkin seeds will be available.

The class, taught by Tim Parks, will cover seed selection, soils, fertility, pests, pollination, pruning and irrigation.

Weigh-off

The group will hold the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth weigh-off Oct. 3 at Parks Garden Center. Total prize money for the weigh-off is $12,500.

In 2007, the club set the world record for 10 heaviest pumpkins at one weigh-off. The ten heaviest averaged 1399.5 pounds.

The weigh-off has divisions for heaviest giant pumpkin, green squash, tomato, watermelon, cantaloupe, hard stem pumpkin and longest gourd.
