Youth show steers, heifers at Pennsylvania Farm Show

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Lindsay Upperman of Chambersburg, Franklin County, took grand champion market steer honors with her 1,315-pound light heavyweight crossbred steer, Stetson, Jan. 8, at the 2012 Pennsylvania Farm Show.

Upperman, 19, was proud of her homebred and owned steer. “He’s my baby. That I bred him made it that much more sweet.”

Chris MacCauley of Atglen, Chester County, earned reserve champion market steer honors. MacCauley’s 1,325-pound crossbred steer was also from the light heavyweight class.

Dr. Doug Parrett from the University of Illinois judged 57 market steers.

Breed champions. Champion and reserve champions of each breed are:

Champion Angus steer: Jared Fessler, Lebanon County; reserve champion Angus: Freddy Frey, Lancaster County;

Champion Hereford steer: Troy Longenecker, Lebanon County; reserve champion Hereford: Jayson Lux, Philadelphia County;

Champion Shorthorn steer: Ruby E. Monn, Cumberland County; reserve champion Shorthorn: Alexis Cash, York County;

Champion other purebred steer: Brody Fitzgerald, Chester County; reserve champion: Megan Vonada, Clinton County;

Champion lightweight crossbred steer: Andrea Foore, York County; reserve champion: Kassidi Good, Armstrong County; champion middleweight crossbred steer: Lena M. Bioni, Washington County; reserve champion middleweight: Bryce Fitzgerald, Chester County; champion heavyweight crossbred steer: Paige Stahl, Somerset, County; reserve champion heavyweight: Jacob Diamond, Fayette County.

Heifer show

Exhibitors from ages eight to 18 presented 205 beef heifers to judges Chip Kemp and Doug Parrett at this year’s Farm Show. No supreme champions are selected.

Seven breeds of heifers were shown. The champion and reserve champion heifers of each breed were:

Angus grand champion: Cherry Knoll Jana 1136, Matthew Mitchell, Reinholds, Lancaster County; Angus reserve grand champion: LVA Giddyup Cheyenne 1001, Alayna Clark, Mifflintown, Mifflin County;

Hereford grand champion: KD Queen of Hearts 11Y ET, Kelsey Diehl, Fairfield, Adams County; Hereford reserve: KD Brandi 9X ET, Kelsey Diehl, Fairfield, Adams County;

Limousin grand champion: DOEA American Honey, Dylan Clark, Enon Valley, Lawrence County; Limousin reserve grand champion: CYKY Dandelion Wine 5Y, Jessica Kelly, Wampum, Lawrence County;

Maine-Anjou grand champion: Wolf Constance 21Y, Hannah Ingrund, Lewisburg, Union County; Maine-Anjou reserve: DGC Martina Y04, Dylan Giebner, Saegertown, Crawford County;

Mainetainer grand champion: Miss Giovanna, Samantha Fabian, Acme, Fayette County; Mainetainer reserve: LSC Rustique 120Y, Samantha Truax, Hustontown, Fulton County;

Shorthorn grand champion: Sull Sassy Crystal ET, Rachel Clark, Mercersburg, Franklin County; Shorthorn reserve: MH Sweet Vintage, Blake Herman, Beavertown, Snyder County;

Simmental grand champion: SSC Spicy 55x, Chris Gros, Halifax, Dauphin County; Simmental reserve: Benners In Dew Time Y13, Emily Benner, Mifflintown, Juniata Co.
