Pennsylvania Fresh Apple Pie



  • 3 1/2 cups fresh apples peeled, cored and sliced
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 20 caramels unwrapped and melted
  • Pie Crumbs:
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • Pie Crust:
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup ice water
  • Directions

    Mix the sugar, flour and spice; toss to coat the apples. Pour mixture into an unbaked pie shell. Top with the caramel candy. Top with the crumbs.
    Pie Crumbs: Mix everything in a small bowl. Work with hands to form crumbs. Put on top of pie before putting it in the oven.
    Pie Crust: Mix shortening, butter, flour and salt with a pastry cutter. Add the cold water to the dough. Work with your hands to form a ball. Roll onto a flour-covered pastry cloth. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes at 375ยบ.
