Dairy farmers in the Northeast are facing a milk supply glut. According to Bennington Banner, the oversupply of milk is happening around the rest of the country, too.

In the Northeast, milk is being dumped by dairy cooperatives at processing plants because they aren’t able to handle all of it. Massachusetts-based Agri-Mark dairy cooperative, which includes processing plants, takes the cream off of the top of the milk to make butter, then dumps the rest of the milk in manure pits.

Currently, butter prices are up but milk prices are down from last July. The past five years have seen record milk prices for farmers.
