Slacking regulations are now an enforced steam boiler law

COLUMBUS – Lax steam boiler laws and licensing requirements are now a thing of the past.

Gov. Bob Taft signed the historical steam boiler bill in an effort to prevent another steam explosion like the one that occurred last summer at the Medina County Fair.

The final decision comes almost exactly one year to the date after Cliff Kovacic’s 1918 Case 110-horsepower steam-powered tractor exploded, killing five, critically burning 10 and hospitalizing 40 others.

H.B. 344 will create the Historical Boiler Licensing Board and establish licensing requirements for operators of historical boilers.

The bill will go into effect 90 days after it is filed with the Secretary of State.
