WEST MIDDLESEX, Pa. – The 6th annual Tri-State Conservation Tillage conference will be held Jan. 28 at the Radisson Hotel in West Middlesex, Pa., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This conference was developed to help agricultural producers better implement conservation tillage practices for the unique soil and weather conditions of western Pennsylvania, northeastern Ohio, and western New York. The theme for this year’s program is “An Economical Systems Approach to Conservation Tillage.”

Jayson Harper, Penn State Agricultural Economist will help those in attendance explore the economics of conservation tillage, while utilizing some figures from local producers.

Barry Franz, State Resource Conservationist with the Natural Resource Conservation Service in Pennsylvania will discuss implications of the new six year USDA Farm Bill.

Other topics to be addressed include troublesome weeds in reduced tillage systems; monitoring and controlling slugs in grain crops; and phosphorus-based nutrient management planning.

A group of local producers will participate in a panel discussion on the topic of manure management in reduced tillage systems.

Manure can present some difficult challenges in these systems, but these managers will offer some practical approaches they have adopted and advice to overcome adverse conditions.

The registration fee for the conference is $20 and includes lunch and materials. For more information or to register for the conference contact a local Penn State Extension Office or Harvey Pinkerton at Penn Soil RC&D at 814-226-6118.
