CORTLAND, Ohio — Heather Wells of Warren and Dan Prokop of Cortland have been awarded the American Youth Foundation’s I Dare You Leadership Award in recognition of personal integrity, balanced living and potential for leadership.

The honor was presented May 5 by Michelle Adkins, Trumbull County Ohio State University Extension 4-H educator at the Trumbull County 4-H advisory meeting.

Wells is the daughter of Andrea Wells and has been a 4-H member for 10 years. Wells was a youth representative on the Trumbull County 4-H Advisory Committee and participated in the 2008 4-H Proclamation Day with the Trumbull County Commissioners.

Prokop is the son of Elizabeth Prokop and has been a 4-H member for 10 years. He has taken projects in the vet science, leadership and camping areas.

The I Dare You Award is presented each year by the American Youth Foundation.

CHESTERVILLE, Ohio — America’s Country Farmers 4-H club met May 4 at the Chesterville United Methodist Church.

The fundraiser at Tractor Supply Center in Ontario June 21 was discussed. It will be a hot dog roast and members will have animals on display. It was pointed out that this will be a good chance for members to display their knowledge of their fair project.

Advisers encouraged members to attend the upcoming quality assurance at the fairgrounds.

Community service officer Brandon Davidson talked about recycling as a project and a possible educational field trip to the recycling center. All members except one were present at officer training in April.

Officers are: Brandt Fay, recreation; news reporter, Nate Bowman; Kathleen Bowman, historian; Brandon Davidson, community service; Jesse Coscello, health and safety; Joshua Snell, secretary; Mandy Fay, treasurer; Walker Fay, vice president; Danielle Snell, president.

The next meeting is May 18 at Chesterville United Methodist Church. Members are required to bring their project books for review.

LISBON, Ohio — The Rough Riders met April 20 to make posters for the health and safety contest. They also participated in a clean-up day at the fairgrounds.

NORTH BENTON, Ohio — The Village Varieties 4-H club met May 6 at North Benton Presbyterian Church.

A guest speaker, Mary Savage from the Sebring Unit of the Salvation Army, spoke about the Red Kettle Campaign in the area. The Village Varieties raised the third-most money among local organizations that rang bells for the Salvation Army.

In old business, the club discussed sending notes of encouragement to servicemen currently serving in Iraq.

Lillian Wood gave a health report on important health habits; Gabby Sanor presented a report on horse health; Logan Jones gave a health report on personal hygiene; Logan Jarvis’ health report addressed how to avoid sun damage; Olivia Jarvis gave a report about safe computer use.

John Wilson gave a report on working safely with farm animals; Maggie McDonald gave a report on horse safety and also gave a demonstration on drawing animals.

The next meeting will be held May 20.

NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio — The Silver Spurs met April 19 with nine members present.

The club will have a bake sale at Agland in New Philadelphia from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 31.

Joseph Shuss gave a presentation on trimming a goat’s hooves.

The next meeting was scheduled for May 2 and was held at the Bowerston Park with 14 members present.

May 10 was be tag-in at the fairgrounds in Cadiz.

The club will meet May 17 at the fairgrounds to help clean up from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This will be the club’s community service project.

The next meeting will also be at 10 a.m. May 17 at the fairgrounds in Cadiz.
