A roundup of 4-H news for the week of July 17, 2008

MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. — The Ridge Runners 4-H club met July 8 at the home of adviser Annette Clark. Members’ activity records were scored during the meeting.

Members attending 4-H camp were recognized, and members discussed the upcoming fair. Livestock may start arriving the evening of July 26 and animals must be in place by noon July 27. Nonlivestock 4-H projects need to be turned in to the 4-H building before noon July 26.

Members will help with a fairground-wide cleaning day July 19. Also on the club’s calendar are: July 10, soap workshop; July 12, rabbit showmanship; July 13, goat clipping and picnic; July 15, goat barn clean up; and July 24, goat milk fudge workshop.

Talks were given by Alina and Janis Williamson on their hog projects. They also did a demonstration on how to show a rabbit. Amy Evans gave a talk about dairy showmanship and a demonstration on photography. Molly Hubbs did a demonstration on her sewing project. Olivia Hubbs did a demonstration on animal health.

BURTON, Ohio — Geauga County’s clothing project judging and style revue show will be July 22 at the Notre Dame Educational Center, 13000 Auburn Road, Chardon.

Clothing project judging will be held from 1-4 p.m. The style revue, which is open to the public, will be from 7-9 p.m.

One member from each category will be chosen to represent Geauga County at the Ohio State Fair.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Dairy 4-H members in Pennsylvania may apply to attend the National 4-H Dairy Conference this fall in Madison, Wis.

Up to eight individuals, age 15-19, will be chosen to represent Pennsylvania at the Sept. 28 – Oct. 1 conference. Each county 4-H program can nominate one 4-H member; applications are available online at www.das.psu.edu. Click on “Dairy Cattle,” under “4-H Programs,” to find more information about the conference.

All nominations must be submitted to Penn State by July 25.

Candidates will be interviewed by a selection committee at Penn State’s 4-H Achievement Days in August. Any candidate not attending Achievement Days will be interviewed by phone during that week. For more information, contact Dale Olver at 814-863-3664.

CHESTERVILLE, Ohio — America’s Country Farmers 4-H club met June 29 at the Fay Farm for a barbecue and a goat workshop.

The secretary and treasurer each gave reports. An update was given on the TSC fundraiser and petting zoo on June 21 at TSC in Ontario.
Members discussed a possible fundraiser at a horse show in the fall. The possibility of a car wash was also discussed.

Demonstrations were given by Brandt Fay and Kathleen Bowman.

After the demonstrations, members were divided into groups and went to different stations to learn about goats. Members learned how to show goats, wash and trim goats and did a skillathon practice on goat parts.

The final meeting in July will be July 27 at the Chesterville Methodist Church.
