Join in on the discussion of the book Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones on August 23, 2016 from 7-8 p.m at the Salem Public Library Book Discussion for Adults. Open to the public, the discussion is free of cost to attend with no registration required. The book may be borrowed from the library.

Silver Sparrow, set in a middle class neighborhood in Atlanta in the 1980s, revolves around James Witherspoon, a bigamist with two families – a public one and a secret one. The story also includes James’ two daughters, Dana and Chaurisse, and their mothers. While Dana knows that she is not James’ only daughter and her mother is not James’ only wife, Chaurisse does not know that she is part of James’ secret family. Dana and her mother have to sacrifice a great deal so James’ legitimate wife and child can live happily and sheltered. Chaurisse lives a lonely life oblivious to James’ secrets. The two girls accidentally meet when both girls are fourteen and become friends; all the while Dana knows that Chaurisse is her sister. The story of James, Dana, Chaurisse, and their mothers has many secrets and when there are secrets, there is truth that will eventually come to light. Silver Sparrow delivers surprises and complexities while covering expectations and fragility.

Stop in or call the library at 330-332-0042 for additional information.
