SCBA’s 2016 Beginners Beekeeping Class and Practicum

So you want to be a beekeeper? Just like any other livestock, keeping bees is not easy and it can be expensive! There’s a lot of information out there as well as misinformation. Here’s where Summit County Beekeepers can help. Learn from experienced beekeepers who can help you sort through that information. Our goal is to give you the tools to be the best steward of your bees possible. We’ve already made those mistakes so you don’t have to.

When: Wednesdays, January 13, 20, 27 and February 3 and 10, 2016 from 7-9 p.m.

Where: The Summit County Fairgrounds, 229 E Howe Rd., Tallmadge, Ohio 44278
Classes will be held in the Virginia O’Casek Hall building

Cost: $80.00 per person or $100.00 per family. This includes 5 instructional sessions, your class book by Kim Flottum, “Backyard Beekeeping” (a $20 value) and a 1 year membership to Summit County Beekeeping Association ($20 value). All participants in the class will be entered into a raffle for a $75 gift certificate to help you begin your beekeeping adventure!

Class will cover basic honeybee biology, getting started with honey bees, equipment, diseases of the honeybee , plants and trees beneficial for honey bees, fundamentals of hive management, harvesting your crop and preparing for winter. The club has many hands on activities planned throughout the year to help you grow as a beekeeper. This includes hands-on experience at local apiaries!
