A warm spring evening greeted dairy families and friends as they attended the 42nd Daffodil Dairy Sale held Saturday evening, March 25, 2017 at the Carroll County Fairgrounds, Carrollton, Ohio.
The Daffodil Sale, so named for the county’s official flower, was started several years ago as a means for dairymen to merchandise and purchase outstanding dairy cattle of all breeds. Each year there is a drawing, for youth ages eight to 18, for vouchers to help youth in the purchase of animals.
This year four were given away — a $300 voucher donated by Kiko Family Farms, a $250 voucher donated by Anthony Feed and Supply, and two $250 vouchers donated by PBS Animal Health/Dairy Health U.S.A. Winners of the vouchers were Anna McCracken, Berlin Center, Ohio; Mitchell Reynolds, Wooster, Ohio; Levi Crider, Carrollton, Ohio and Hannah McDonald, Washington, Pennsylvania.
A Bonnie Mohr print and a basket filled with cheese, crackers, wine and other goodies was auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Carroll County Promotion Board Scholarship Fund. The selling price was $375 and it was purchased by Larry Nisly, Carrollton Livestock Auction, Carrollton, Ohio.
The high selling consignment in the sale at $2,900 was a 3-year-old Holstein, Lot 5, Duncan Landon Janet, consigned by Drew Duncan, Warsaw, Ohio, and purchased by Trent Neuenschwander, Dalton, Ohio. Sired by Cameron Ridge GLD Landon, she had recently calved, and was milking well from a beautiful udder that was well attached, high and wide in the rear and had beautiful veining. She was backed by Excellent dams with records to 45,990 pounds of milk and 1,859 butterfat and the pedigree went back to Shanghigh breeding.
Selling for $2,700 was another Holstein, Lot 28, K-Land Kilo Kandi, classified Good Plus 83 at two years, recently fresh and milking 110 pounds with a 5 percent butterfat test. She was very sharp and dairy with a great udder and should go up in classification. Consigned by Charles Gleisner, Sullivan, Ohio, she was purchased by Timmons Farm LTD, Chagrin Falls, Ohio. She was sired by K-Land Kilo from a Patience Sholine Contender-Red dam.
Another high selling bred heifer at $2550 was a Holstein, Lot 13 Klingendale Absolute Alisha RC, an Apples Absolute -Red daughter from a Very Good 86 Sovereign dam. This stylish, eye-appealing Holstein was from a pedigree that featured Excellent and Very Good dams with records to 41,010 pounds of milk and 1,601 butterfat. She is due in June to Loyola-P RC with sexed semen. She was consigned by Ted Renner, Dalton, Ohio and purchased by Trent Neunenschwander, Dalton, Ohio.
A high selling Holstein calf at $2,000 was a Winter Calf, Lot 29, Trealayne Diamondback Lara, consigned by Annie and Adam Specht, Dover, Ohio, and purchased by Ben Haslett, Springdale Farm, Wheeling, West Virginia. Sired by Mr. D Apple Diamondback RC she was from a Scientific Destry daughter.
The high selling Jersey at $1,600 was Lot 42, Bo-Jem Valentino Liza, a bred heifer due to calve in April and bred to Ahlem Headline Pharoah. Her dam had just calved again at nine years of age and has produced over 100,000 pounds of milk. Consigned by Bo-Jem Jerseys c/o Robert Smith and Sons, Beloit, Ohio, she was purchased by Mike Schmuck, Louisville, Ohio.
Selling for $1,075, the high selling Milking Shorthorn was Lot 41, SMS Lady Bella, a fancy, sharp dairy Fall Calf consigned by SMS Farms, c/o Austin Specht, New Philadelphia, Ohio, and purchased by Nicole Bojech, Aurora, Ohio. Her sire was Buckeye Knoll Spark Perform.
There was only one Brown Swiss in the sale, Lot 34, Breeze Ridge Archer Dancer, a Fall Calf and she sold for $1,200 to Russell Stoltzfus, Aurora, Ohio. She was consigned by Reed Breeze, New Brighton, Pennsylvania. Her sire was Blessing Whiskey Archer and her third dam was a PA Bell Ringer 2011 and 2015 and a Production Award Winner in 2015.
The top selling Ayrshire was Lot 36, Jackson-Hill Dwhammy Niki, a bred heifer due in April to Gibbs. She sold for $1,250 to Brent Baker, Carrollton, Ohio, and was consigned by Jeff Atherton, Greenwood, New York. She was sired by Family-Af-Ayr Double Whammy-ET and from a Very Good 88 dam.
The average for all breeds, all ages was $1,400. The volume buyer was Timmons Farm LTD, Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Auctioneer for the sale was Steve Andrews, Wooster, Ohio, with Rudy Kiko, Salem, Ohio, reading the pedigrees. Ringmen were Randall Kiko, Mike Schmuck, and Ryan Kiko. Leaders were Cody Cooper, Madelynn Baker, Colby Tullis, and Emmy Days. The sale was managed by the Daffodil Dairy Committee, Adam Neider, co-chairperson and Sabrina Eick Popadak, co-chairperson.
