Buckeye Shepherd’s Symposium scheduled

COLUMBUS — The 2008 Buckeye Shepherd’s Symposium will be held Dec. 12-13 at the University Plaza Hotel and Conference Center, 3110 Olentangy River Road, Columbus.

Dec. 12 will be the kick-off of the 60th anniversary of the Ohio Sheep Improvement Association with a reception and social time.

The educational portion of the symposium will be conducted Dec. 13.

The primary focus of the symposium will be nutritional and management programs that will help sheep producers stay profitable in the future.

Speakers. Speakers include Dan Morrical, sheep specialist, Iowa State University, to discuss nutritional and management programs, including the use of distillers grains in the sheep flock diet; and Larry Gearhart, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, to discuss the new Ohio fence line law.

A panel of experts will discuss the internal parasite issue in the sheep industry.

Other topics of interest will include an update on the scrapie program, and the American Lamb Board Referendum.

Annual meeting. The Ohio Sheep Improvement Association annual meeting will be the first item on the agenda prior to the program beginning.

The election of a new association officer team will be held.

Members will receive registration packets in early November.

A trade show will also be held, along with a silent auction to raise money for the Ralph Grimshaw Memorial Scholarship Fund.
