(Editor’s note: We share a letter this week from longtime Farm and Dairy columnist G. Russell Evans. The words that follow were dictated by Capt. Evans to his speech therapist.)

Dear Susan:

Thank you and Farm and Dairy for the exposure to my ideas. I have had a stroke and cannot speak well. My friend and speech therapist is helping me to speak again and will attempt some writing tasks when she feels I am ready.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the good wishes.

Special thanks to Barth Farm and to Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Shaw for your kindness and words of support.

G. Russell Evans

Captain, U.S. Coast Guard (Ret.)

Mr. Evans’ speech pathologist added her own note to his words:

“Over the course of the last month or so, I have had the privilege of working with Russell Evans as his speech therapist. I can honestly say that he has become much more than a patient to me in that time.

“Never before have I worked with a more determined person. Every day we proceed, I begin to gain insight into what an incredibly gifted and intelligent person Mr. Evans is. He has a wonderful sense of humor (even at his own expense) and is an exceptionally brave, motivated and dedicated person.

“I would l like to say that I envy your readers for having the opportunity to share in Mr. Evans’ writings. It is extremely difficult for him to communicate verbally and in written form at the present time. He has come far in his work in therapy, but the road is tedious and long and he still has a lot of work cut out for him.

“I have high expectations for Mr. Evans’ continued improvement and progress, and if sheer willpower can return anyone to his previous condition, I have no doubt that Mr. Evans is that person.

“Your words and the kind cards he received from readers have lifted his spirits and touched him deeply. Please continue to send your best wishes and prayers and continue to look for his future thoughts in the Farm and Dairy!”
