Ohio champs at national swine show

LAFAYETTE, Ind. – More than 658 junior purebred swine enthusiasts from 25 states gathered at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville, Ky., July 1-5, to compete for champion titles in the sixth annual National Junior Summer Spectacular.

In the Duroc show, Monica Planalp, Tipton, Ind., claimed the champion title with her Jan. 4 daughter of PENN2 Star Search 6-3. The reserve champion Duroc was exhibited by Jamey Albrecht of Crawfordsville, Ind. This Jan. 14 gilt was a daughter of BAD1 Select Move 64-1.

Tyler Wilt, Washington Court House, Ohio, exhibited the Duroc bred and owned champion with his Jan. 19 daughter of TYWY1 Hidden Treasure 14-2.

A list of winners from Ohio follows:

Duroc Gilt. Class 1: Kalie Bodey, Castalia. Class 12: Tammy Jo Blair, Radnor.

Hampshire Gilt. Class 2: Kasey Smith, Washington Court House.

Yorkshire Gilt. Class 2: Clayton Murphy, New Paris. Class 8: Justin Wagner, Botkins. Class 16: Preston Labig, Greenville.

During the National Junior Summer Spectacular Skillathon, participants put their swine knowledge to use while performing a variety of tasks including ear notching, identifying meat cuts, and answering questions on current issues in agriculture.

Ryan Alty of Mechanicsburg, Ohio, won the senior division of the skillathon. The champion in the junior skillathon was Hallie Frobose of Pemberville, Ohio. All winners received director’s chairs.

Other Ohioans placing in the skillathon include:

Seniors. Mark Wongrowski, Pemberville; Matthew Funderburgh, North Lewisburg; and Kim Rahe, Pemberville.

Intermediates. Hyatt Frobose, Pemberville; Rachel Berry, Cable; Mandi Rohrs, Holgate; Justin Wagner, Botkins; and Amanda Morlock, Wayne.

Juniors. Tonya Fender, Lynchburg.

Novice. Seth Ricker, Fort Jennings; Brittany Black, Orient; and Graceon Ehrman, Tiro.

The race to win the Overall Sweepstakes Awards was close to the end. The Sweepstakes Award is based upon a combination of points from the gilt show, showmanship contest, skillathon and judging contest.

Seniors. Kasey Smith of Washington Court House, Ohio, received fifth place, a pewter plate and $100. Alty placed ninth.

Intermediate. Justin Wagner, Botkins, Ohio took sixth place.

Junior. Fender earned eighth place. Frobose took 10th.

Novice. Murphy took sixth place.
