MEADVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny College, in conjunction with the Allegheny Hillel and the Office of Student Activities, will sponsor a community travel excursion to the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington Nov. 2.
The museum’s permanent exhibition, The Holocaust, serves as the facility’s main vehicle for teaching about the Holocaust, the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933- 1945.
Jews were the primary victims, although Roman and Slavic people, people with physical and mental disabilities and countless others suffered grievous oppression and death under Nazi tyranny.
The museum includes several other permanent exhibitions, including an orientation film, the Wexner Learning Center and the Wall of Remembrance.
This year, the museum features a special exhibition, Remember the Children: Daniel’s Story, which recounts the history of the holocaust from the perspective of a young boy growing up in Nazi Germany.
“Being there and seeing the photos, archived materials and artifacts first hand has an immediacy of experience that cannot be communicated in the same way as through the written word,” said Linda DeMeritt, professor.
The Holocaust exhibit is recommended for visitors 11 and older.
Buses will depart at 5:30 a.m. from Meadville, Pa., behind the Brooks Hall on Park Avenue. They will depart Washington that evening at 7:00 p.m. and arrive back in Meadville at approximately 1 a.m.
Tickets for this excursion are $25 for Allegheny College students, $35 for Allegheny employees and $45 for non-Allegheny attendees and include round-trip coach transportation, a light breakfast and dinner and museum entrance.
Tickets can be purchased with credit cards (Mastercard, Visa or Discover Card) by calling 814-332-3101.
