CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — The Zane Trace FFA Food Science Team placed first out of 13 teams in the District 7 contest Nov. 13. The team consisted of senior Mike Bell, juniors Cody Clark and Nick Naumovski and sophomore Dylan Wolfe. Gabby Gwinn, Levi DeLong and Faith Smith also competed.

The team will advance to the State competition Dec. 2 at the Ohio State University Parker Food Science lab.

Three members of the Zane Trace FFA ranked among the best in the nation during the National FFA Agri-Science Fair Oct. 25-27.

Julia Everidge and Olivia Pflaumer placed fourth and received a gold rating in the area of Social Sciences. Their research focused on the effectiveness of various lessons in increasing knowledge of pollinators among students.

Katie Shelby placed eighth and received a silver rating in the area of Food Science for her research project that compared the sensory evaluation of various fat substitutes in brownies.

COLLINS, Ohio — The Western Reserve FFA Alumni held its annual square dance following the FFA’s Greenhand Degree Ceremony Nov. 10.

During the Greenhand Degree Ceremony, 13 FFA members were presented their degrees and stamped their geen painted hand on the 2017 Greenhand mural.

The square dance kicked off at 6 p.m. and was called by Danny Beck. The Western Reserve FFA Alumni also held a silent auction and a cake walk.

SULLIVAN, Ohio — Black River FFA members volunteered at the district Clothing Swap Oct. 26, arranged by Black River Elementary Teacher Sarah Luck.

The clothing swap was an opportunity for families to donate and/or exchange gently used clothing. Each family that brought in clothes received a ticket to swap for additional items.

FFA members helped sort and set out the clothing and helped people shop. Left over clothing was donated to a ministry that helps domestic violence victims and their children.

FFA members Anna and Lexi Shearer, Eric Cordonnier, Cassidy Mrakuzic, Katlyn Kubitz and Amanda Mycek volunteered to help.

UTICA, Ohio — The Utica FFA Alumni held its 28th annual farm toy show and first pancake breakfast Nov. 12.

This year, 25 vendors were in attendance and over 400 visitors attended. All proceeds from both the toy show and breakfast benefit the Utica FFA Alumni, who uses this money for support of the Utica FFA Chapter.

On Nov. 13, 14 members of the Utica FFA chapter attended the District Food Science CDE at Zane Trace High School. Utica FFA placed third out of 14 teams.

Individually, Kim Hornyak placed eighth; Seth Blake, 11th; Aramaik Wright, 18th; Trina Orr, 23rd; Katelyn Dunn, 44th; Alexis Bailey, 68th; Brooklyn Schmidlin, 73rd; Tanner LaRue, 86th; Courtney Smith, 91st; Brett Homman, 98th; Emily Hill, 102nd; Dawson Smith, 103rd; Hannah Finch, 110th; Austin Smith, 123rd.

WEST SALEM, Ohio — Members of the Northwestern FFA chapter competed in the sub-district parliamentary procedure contest and district job interview contest Nov. 21, at Triway High School.

The novice parliamentary procedure team included: Sara Cassady, Riley Stull, Craig Wellert, Desiree Smith, Haley Wilson, Valerie Imhoff, Cole Wharton, and Lizzy Howman. The team placed first and will advance to the district competition Dec. 6 at Northwestern High School.

The varsity team included: Brock Tegtmeier, Austen Wood, Cody Tegtmeier, Kyle Piscione, Cody Morrow, and David Miley. Zach Smith and Jessie Bair were team alternates. The team placed first and will also advance to the district contest.

Four members competed in the district job interview contest: Emily Finley, Cody Morrow, Jordan Melegari, and Valerie Imhoff. Morrow and Imhoff took second and Melegari placed fourth in their respective divisions. Finley placed first in her division and will advance to the state contest Dec. 2.

Northwestern FFA Students of the Month for October and November are David Miley and Jessie Bair. Miley and Bair will receive free ice cream and a parking spot reserved for the FFA Student of the Month.

Miley is the chapter treasurer and participates in multiple CDEs including parliamentary procedure, soil judging, dairy judging, and grain merchandising. He also attended National and State Conventions.

Bair is the sentinel and is active within the chapter by participating in soil judging, parliamentary procedure, general livestock judging, and food science.
