State ag officials in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are urging poultry farmers to be careful, in light of the USDA confirming highly pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu, cases in several states.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza has been confirmed in a non-commercial backyard flock (nonpoultry) in Michigan and a commercial poultry flock in Delaware.

USDA has confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza in a flock of commercial broiler chickens in Kentucky and a backyard flock of birds in Virginia. 

USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza in a commercial turkey flock in Dubois County, Indiana. 

State veterinarian Kevin Brightbill urged Pennsylvania’s poultry industry to ramp up biosecurity practices due to the spread of bird flu in Asia and Europe.

Poultry flock owners, regardless of size or confinement practices, need to set up their biosecurity game to prevent the spread of avian influenza.

Farmers are urged to watch for signs of sickness in their birds following the discovery of high pathogenicity avian influenza at a farm in Tennessee.
