Matthew and Bethany McCarty live hectic lives on their Licking County farm. They grew up in the area and purchased about 50 acres near Utica in 2020 where they operate McCarty Farmstead.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced another $325 million for “climate-smart” farming projects, bringing the total funding for the new Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities program to over $3 billion. 

An Ohio farm used a drone to seed cereal rye into standing corn as part of an experiment to see the best way to get cover crop seed planted in the fall.

In 2021, Sasha Miller is hoping to get pears from the trees she planted a few years ago for the first time, at Purplebrown Farmstead. Those trees are part of her long term plan to develop a cider orchard. But her permaculture system also involves pigs, poultry, vegetables and mushrooms. Permaculture, Miller explained, involves creating a system that can be sustainable and self sufficient.

Farm groups, politicians and environmentalists want to make carbon a new commodity, to battle climate change. Carbon markets, in theory, could be a win-win. But they bring a lot of questions about the roles of public and private work to address climate change, and who benefits the most from those efforts.
