SALEM, Ohio — Farm and Dairy writers have earned three awards from the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists in the trade publications division of its 2008 writing competition.

The awards, announced Aug. 25, honored staff reporter Janelle Skrinjar and editor Susan Crowell.

Skrinjar won a second-place award in the Best Personality Profile category for her article, Raising Rabbits, which appeared in the Aug. 16, 2007, issue. She also took third place in the Best General Story division with Still Heroes, a feature profiling the Honor Flight program that was published Sept. 13, 2007.

She joined the Farm and Dairy staff in 2005 after earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Akron.

Crowell placed second for Best Columnist in Ohio, based on a collection of her work.

She joined the newspaper in 1985 as a staff reporter and was named editor in 1989.

The awards will be presented Oct. 18 at ceremonies at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.

Earlier this summer, Crowell and staff reporter Andrea Zippay were recognized for their writing with honors in the National Newspaper Association’s annual Better Newspaper Competition.
