MARIETTA, Ohio — The Washington County office of Ohio State University Extension held its annual 4-H Camp Counselor Assessment Night Feb. 23 at the Washington County Career Center.

More than 60 area teens 14 to 18 showed up to be evaluated. After the assessment night experience, each teen is required to have a face-to-face interview during Ohio 4-H Week, March 9-12.

If a 4-H teen is selected as a camp counselor, they will attend at least 24 hours of training and planning sessions over the next few months, including an overnight counselors’ camp training at Hervida 4-H Camp in Waterford. Counselors will be responsible for planning and teaching most of the activities and programs offers at Washington County’s four 4-H camps, under the direction of Maggie Webster, 4-H camp director, and other adult volunteers.

MALVERN, Ohio — The Brown Frame 4-H club held its meeting March 1.

The club received first place in the 4-H week window decorating contest.

Each member was asked to pay $15 to the Extension office to be in 4-H. Cloverbuds should pay $5.

Carroll County Fair rule changes were discussed. Dairy beef tag-in is March 14.

Committees were appointed. There will be a booth committee, barrel painting committee and a flower planting committee.

The next meeting is April 4 at 9:30 a.m.

CARROLLTON, Ohio — Carrollton Beef Club met March 1 with 19 in attendance at the Washington Township Building.

The club discussed the large animal committee report, the pizza pickup kit, community service ideas, Junior Fair rule changes, activity fees, dairy beef feeder weigh-in and the Ohio Beef Expo.

The club also collected pizza kits and discussed community service ideas.
Travis Johnson demonstrated lamb shots and tags and Robert McEntire demonstrated a sander and cutter kit.

Kurt Kline gave a safety talk on propane safety. Caleb Hartong gave a safety talk on fire extinguishers. Kurt Davis discussed floor and baler safety. Joe Grubbs recommended items for a supply kit.

The next meeting is March 29 at 2 p.m. with the location not determined yet. Fire and electrical safety will be the topic.

MINERVA, Ohio — The M-Town Clovers elected officers at its Feb. 28 meeting at the Minerva First Christian Church.

Lauren Hawkins was elected president; vice president, Emory Bandurka; secretary, Brittany Boord; treasurer, Kevin Cogan; and news reporter, Megan Kindelberger.

Enrollment cards were turned in.

The next meeting is March 28 at 3 p.m. at the Minerva First Christian Church.

PARIS, Ohio — The Happy Farmerettes and Farmers 4-H club held its first meeting of the year at the Thouvenin home Feb. 12. The meeting was led by Jacqueline Gallo, vice president of the previous year.

Brittany Gibson gave the treasurer’s report and Haylee Gallo approved it.

The members then discussed old business including the hayride at the end of the year, along with the fair and state fair representatives.

New business was then discussed, including book orders, finalizing of projects, signing of the constitution, enrollment forms and the distributing of schedules and ordering of refreshments.

The members also discussed the April Swiss Steak Dinner, located at the Nimishillen Grange. The dinner will be held April 25. The members are still deciding on the theme of the basket they are donating this year.

The members then decided on officers. They are as follows: Jacqueline Gallo, president; Serena Thomas, vice president; Rachel Ray, secretary; Rebecca Maurer, treasurer; Michael Breining, news reporter; Brittany Gibson, health officer; Renee Greathouse, safety officer and Haylee Gallo, recreation leader.

The next meeting will be March 12.

MINERVA, Ohio — Members, parents and farm animals from the Clover Valley Variety 4-H Club visited the residents of the Great Trail Care Center. The residents were greeted by an assortment of animals owned and cared for by the 4-H members.

The petting zoo consisted of rabbits, goats, chickens, dogs and cats.
The club completed the day with lunch and recreation.

Clover Valley’s officers for 2009 are: president, Lucy Thompson; vice president, Sam Givens; treasurer, Caroline Thompson; secretary, Audrey Leahey; sergeant of arms, Robbie Leahey; recreation, Alyssa Given and Shiloh Bailey; health and safety, Jacob Lutz and Emily Thompson and reporter/historian, Shelby Ross and Ashley Brewer.

The next meeting will be March 18.

CECIL, Pa. — The Cecil 4-H club held a pizza party during its organizational meeting Feb. 20.

Members completed registration forms, selected projects for the 2009 season and worked on posters for 4-H State Achievement Days.

The next meeting will be at 2:30 p.m. March 15 at the Millers Run Grange, Cecil, Pa.

It is not too late to join 4-H for 2009. New members are welcome to attend.

NORTH LIMA, Ohio — The Pinelakers 4-H club held its first meeting Feb. 26 at Mt. Olivet Church to discuss plans for the club.

The club met new members, elected new officers, discussed the family weekend camping trip, fundraisers, Streetscape – Downtown Youngstown, Canfield Fair and quality assurance March 7.

The next meeting is at 7:30 p.m. March 26.

Club officers are: president, Hoss Biggs; vice president, Heidi Moff; secretary, Rachel Susany; asst. secretary, Jessica Miletta; treasurer, Zach Kemp; recreation, Baylee Felger; health and safety, Zoe Bugno and Nicky DelSignor

CARROLLTON, Ohio — The Augusta Ranchers met Feb. 24 with 10 members present for officer training.

Members amended the club constitution and by-laws and made final project selections.

The regular monthly meeting was held at 7 p.m. March 10 at the Brown Frame Community Center to discuss upcoming fund raiser and a program on Good Sportsmanship + Ethical Decisions = 4-H Success.

CORTLAND, Ohio — Nina Baumgartner was crowned dairy princess and Hannah Trumbull was crowned junior dairy princess at the Trumbull County Holstein Banquet held March 7.

Upcoming events for the Trumbull Dairy Feeders include March tagging of all dairy feeder calves that are going to Trumbull County Fair. For time and details call Kenny at 330-442-2950.

April 5 will be the next meeting. May 2 will be the annual bake sale at Tractor Supply in Warren in conjunction with the antique tractor show.

NORTH BENTON, Ohio — The Mahoning County Goat Herders had a meeting Feb. 16.

The American pledge was said by Keri May, and the 4-H pledge by Jonathon James.

There was a mandatory quality assurance March 7 at Canfield High School. There was a dog show March 8 in Youngstown. The club voted on sending a goat to a Third World country to help needed families. The club voted on doing a heifer project and world vision.

PATTERSONVILLE, Ohio — The Farmers ‘N Charmers 4-H club held its meeting March 3 at the Augusta Masonic Lodge at 7 p.m.

A total of 15 were recorded with all officers present.

Members discussed their fundraisers and the new community service project, which will be launched with Tom Kishman of Kishman’s IGA in Minerva, Ohio.

They raised enough funds from their cake auction to pay for their club’s entire annual membership dues to the county and had extra for the club’s project books.

They discussed and made separate committees for the annual creamed chicken over homemade noodles and biscuits dinner scheduled for April 5 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Augusta Masonic Lodge in Pattersonville. The club is currently looking for donations and advertising throughout the community.

Fundraiser forms were also passed out for bulk frozen foods.

The educational and recreational program scheduled for the evening was a game created parents and advisers, Are You Smarter Than A Cloverbud?. A prize was given for the smartest member.

The next meeting will be a special one March 19 at 7 p.m. at the Augusta Lodge to discuss and finalize all fundraiser dinner preparations.

The next stated meeting will be held April 7 at 7 p.m. at the Augusta Lodge.
