A roundup of FFA news for the week of June 12, 2008

ANDOVER, Ohio — The Pymatuning Valley FFA chapter took May 20 to teach kindergartners and first graders where their food comes from with a program called Food For America.

The children got to learn how they get fish, bacon, cereal, chicken, milk and hamburgers. At the end of the day, the children got a bag filled with goodies and a coloring book.

BELOIT, Ohio — West Branch FFA helped sponsor a barnyard bananza May 31 at the Mount Union Nature Center.

The students helping and bringing animals were: Cami Tuel, Andrea Menegay, Zach Wagner, Billy Grammer and Liz Wyss.

Other students helping were Darby Elder, Max Sharp and Jordan Rohaley.

Mike Bardo, the FFA instructor, also helped by transporting animals and overseeing the events.

ASHLAND, Ohio — The Crestview FFA traveled to Daysprings Nursing Home May 23 and set up a petting zoo for the residents. Animals included: a Jersey feeder calf, two rabbits, a lamb, a sheep, a dog, and five kittens.

Members who helped with the petting zoo included: Misty Hale, Molly Ellis, Jeb May, James Dotterer, Sam Ellis, Melanie Fitch, Ginny Rose Walters, Eric Bruzda, Travis Mays, and James Holiday.

On May 30, members planted an 8-acre test plot on the chapter farm. Nineteen different types of crops were planted. All of the seeds for the plots were donated. Most of the brands used were round-up ready seeds. The seeds used had different hybrid traits to prevent corn rootworm and corn borer.
