The book, “Secret Daughter,” by Shilpi Somaya Gowda will be discussed on December 15, 2015 at 7 p.m. in the Quaker Room of Salem Public Library located at 821 E. State St., Salem, OH 44460.

About the book: A daughter is born to Kavita and her husband in a remote village in India. The culture of India has long favored males so Kavita makes the heartrending decision to put her beloved daughter in a Mumbai orphanage hoping the daughter’s future will be brighter through adoption.

Half a world away, American doctor Somer, has decided to adopt a baby after learning she cannot have a natural born child of her own. After seeing the photo of Kavita’s baby, Somer and her husband fall in love with the child and so begins the intertwining of the stories of the child, her natural mother and her soon to be adoptive mother. Woven into the tale are the struggles of the adoptive parents, the agony of the natural mother as she deals with her chosen sacrifice, and the challenge of bringing to these lives happiness and contentment.

This book is available in the Adult Services Department for borrowing. Book discussions are open to the general public. Registration is not required to take part in the discussion group. For more information please contact the library at 330-332-0042.
