CHESTERLAND, Ohio – Entries for the Ohio Maple Producers’ annual John Berry Midsummer Maple Products Contest are due July 28 at Richards Maple Products in Chardon, Ohio, or care of Gary Graham at Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster.
Producers are encouraged to enter their 2003 maple syrup and maple candy.
Awards will be given in the following categories: light amber syrup, medium amber syrup, dark amber syrup, 12 sugarcake leaves, 1-pound brick, 1-pound cream, half pint maple spread, half pint granulated sugar, and 100-percent maple novelty.
Awards. The Hilton Farley award will be given to the producer with the highest overall score in all classes.
The Ture Johnson New Sugarmaker award will be given to best overall score among entrants with five or less years of experience.
The Small Sugarmaker award will be given to the syrup with the highest score among those entrants with 250 taps or less.
The Ohio State Fair Commission has provided $500 in prize money and all products will be on display at the Ohio State Fair in the Ag and Hort Building for the duration of the fair.
There is a $10 entry fee for a single class with a $25 maximum to enter three or more classes.
Entries will be judged July 30.
