Joyce Mullet of Coshocton was honored at the 2008 Ohio 4-H Volunteer Conference.
COLUMBUS — For more than four decades, Joyce Mullet of Coshocton has been instrumental in helping develop youth throughout the Ohio 4-H Youth Development Program.
To thank her for this service, she was honored March 8 at the 2008 Ohio 4-H Volunteer Conference.
“I enjoy working with the members and seeing their growth,” Mullet said. “Working on projects and learning something new is a main emphasis, but in doing this, they learn responsibility and accountability.”
Sarah Jane Lindsey, Coshocton County 4-H Extension Educator, said Mullet has been a 4-H member, 4-H parent, club adviser, adult staff for county 4-H junior camp and served on many countywide 4-H committees.
Contributions
“I feel Joyce’s greatest contribution to our 4-H program is the varied experience she brings to the table and her willingness to give of her time and knowledge so others can grow through 4-H,” Lindsey said.
Vicki Schwartz, Ohio 4-H state Extension specialist, believes the best way to build on the 4-H youth program is through volunteers.
“It is because of volunteers that Ohio has the impact it does on more than 222,000 young people in Ohio,” Schwartz said.
Many Ohio volunteers become 4-H volunteers immediately after they’ve graduated from the 4-H program. Candace Winegar of Coshocton did just that. The 19-year-old college sophomore is now an adviser in the 4-H club she grew up in.
Leadership
“I want to encourage kids to join 4-H — so many people think 4-H is just animals, sewing and cooking,” she said. “These people do not realize 4-H can help you with leadership skills, social skills, speaking skills and prepare for the future,” she explained.
“I believe the greatest thing in 4-H is seeing kids learn new things, make new friends and break the shell of shyness.”
