Pennsylvania Farm Show livestock sale breaks record

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Records were shattered when 423 animals grossed $376,121 at the annual junior livestock sale Jan. 9, at the 2018 Pennsylvania Farm Show — around $6,700 above the 2017 total.

Sale of champions

Market lambs

Grand champion: McKenzie Stadtmiller, Dayton, Armstrong County; Bid: $6,700; Buyer: Penn Waster and Scott Wagner.

Reserve champion: Renee Svonavec, Rockwood, Somerset County; Bid: $5,500; Buyer: Fulton Bank and Bell & Evans.

Market goats

Grand champion: Heidi Barkley, Manns Choice, Bedford County; Bid: $7,700; Buyer: Penn Waste and Scott Wagner.

Reserve champion: Callie Taylor, Timblin, Armstrong County; Bid: $4,000; Buyer: Penn Waste, care of Scott Wagner.

Market hogs

Grand champion: Amy Pecora, Harrison City, Westmoreland County; Bid: $9,000; Buyer: Hatfield Quality Meats.

Reserve champion: Trent Stadtmiller, Dayton, Armstrong County; Bid: $5,000; Buyer: Penn Waste.

Market steers

Grand champion: Chris Jordan, Uniontown, Fayette County; Bid: $16,500; Buyer: Fulton Bank and Bell & Evans.

Reserve champion: Kaitlyn Frontera, Waterford, Erie County; Bid: $11,000; Buyer: Saubel’s Market.

Market rabbits

Grand champion: Mason Smith, Lewisburg, Union County; Bid: $2,000; Buyer: Penn Waste.

Reserve champion: Jacob Haschalk, Edinboro, Erie County; Bid: $3,500; Buyer: Bell & Evans Poultry.

Scholarships

Prior to the sale, 28 college students received $98,000 in scholarships through the Pennsylvania Farm Show Scholarship Foundation.

A percentage of earnings in the Sale of Champions, as well as donations from members of the foundation, fund the scholarships.

Outstanding leadership

Throughout the sale, outstanding 4-H leaders were recognized. Betsy MacCauley, of Atglen in Chester County, received the Outstanding Pennsylvania 4-H Sheep Leader Award. She has been involved in the Chester County 4-H program for more than 25 years.

The Outstanding Pennsylvania 4-H Swine Leader award went Paul Yoachim, of Rome in Bradford County. “Pappy”, as he is known to 4-H members, has 33 years of volunteer experience with the Northeast Ag 7 Home Ec. 4-H Club.
