SALEM, Ohio — The Ravenna-area farmhouse whose renovation turned up historic artifacts and a rich family history will be featured on Home & Garden Television (HGTV) next week.
Chris and Tom Hopes’ Civil War-era farmhouse, which was featured in Farm and Dairy Sept. 13, 2007, is the featured home on the cable network’s If Walls Could Talk … March 10.
Chris Hopes said the episode is set to air at 6:30 p.m. Eastern and is titled “The Civil War Shocker.”
About the house
The 1817 tavern-turned-farmhouse is located just north of Ravenna. While remodeling, the couple discovered hidden historic markers relating to the property and early settlers of the area.
Bags full of cardboard bottle caps revealed the farm was once a working dairy that bottled milk under the name Harlan Dale Farms.
Other finds included family photos, a formal photo of a young woman, a love letter, a Sunday School report card, a Christmas card, a 4-H club mailing, and a headstone.
Through research, the Hopeses were able to find Betty Hinman Kennedy, who lived in the house as a child.
Kennedy was on hand when HGTV crews filmed the episode in September.

while at a store in cuyahoga falls tonight (6/25/10) i(came accross milk bottle caps from harlan dale dairy, ravenna, O. being from ravenna, i bought them. they seem to be unused. the store owner told me she had bought them in ravenna. i came home and googled the dairy. this is one of the articles that came up. maybe they are some that were found in the house! wow, this is great. next time we go for a motor cycle ride, my husband and i will go for a drive by the place to see what it looks like.
