Breakfast Patty Melt

Ingredients:

  • 7 oz. ground breakfast sausage
  • 2 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 2 tbsp. butter
  • 2 eggs
  • caramelized onions or bacon jam

Directions:

  1. Preheat grill to 350 to 375 F.
  2. Cook onions on the grill until tender and golden brown in color; remove from the grill and set aside.
  3. Portion sausage into two equally sized balls. When the grill is hot, place sausage balls down on the hot surface, and use a burger press or a stiff spatula to press down until sausage patty is evenly flat. Cook patties until about halfway cooked through for 3 to 4 minutes. Flip and top each with one slice of Swiss cheese and one slice of cheddar cheese. When the sausage is cooked through and the cheese is melted, move to a cooler zone on the grill while the eggs and toast finish cooking.
  4. While the sausage is cooking, butter bread and toast on the grill until golden brown. Then, remove and adjust the grill temperature to medium-low, about 300 to 325 F. Cook the eggs until over-easy or over-medium, based on preference.
  5. Assemble the patty melt. Add the smashed sausage patty and melted cheese to the bottom bread, top with the egg, and add some bacon onion jam or caramelized onions on top. Add the top slice of toasted bread.
  6. Serve warm.
