Beaver County auctioneer sold his talent at Pennsylvania Farm Show

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Lee Hostetter of Darlington, Beaver County, Pa., was named champion auctioneer at the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association Bid-Calling Contest Jan. 13 at the 2010 Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.

Awards

Hostetter, who was named runner up in last year’s contest, has been auctioneering since he was young as part of his family’s business.

Jon Hummer, Manheim, Lancaster County, Pa., was named first runner up in the contest, and Jeff Pennington, New Castle, Lawrence County, Pa., was named rookie of the year.

Judging

Contestants are judged on several different criteria, including visual appearance, voice control, clarity, rhythm and speed. They are also judged on their abilities to describe the item being sold and keep buyers’ attention.

Spectators had the opportunity to buy items that were being auctioned as part of the contest, with part of the proceeds going to the Pennsylvania Farm Show Scholarship Foundation.

Terri Walker from Memphis, Tenn., sold a bushel of apples for $225 during the contest.
