HARRISBURG, Pa. — PennAg Industries Association, a leading statewide member-based agribusiness organization representing a variety of major corporate and related industry groups, recently created a horse council, which will reside under the PennAg umbrella.

Horse council

PennAg consists of eight industry specific councils, including the horse council. The group was developed by interested standardbred and thoroughbred breeders and members of the service and support sector to the equine industry.

“The horse council is an organization of stakeholders in the future of the equine industry, who recognize the need for representation in Pennsylvania,” said Chris Herr, executive vice president of PennAg Industries Association.

“There is power in numbers. With more than 38,000 horse owners in the Commonwealth, the equine industry represents 18 percent of the agribusiness sales in Pennsylvania, second only to the dairy industry. We look forward to representing this segment of the agriculture industry, while complementing the work that is currently being done by the various equine groups around the Commonwealth.”

Mission

The mission of the PennAg Horse Council is to address unmet issues and concerns of Pennsylvania horse breeders. The council will help promote and protect the interests of the Pennsylvania horse industry and provide support to all equine related agriculture interest.

The newly formed council met officially for the first time Sept. 8. A chair and co-chair of the council were voted upon at the meeting.

Rita McMullen, president of the Pennsylvania Quarter Horse Association, will serve as chair of the council, while George Strawbridge Jr., will serve as co-chair.
