CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Four members of the Zane Trace FFA chapter recently participated in the state animal behavior, welfare and husbandry career development event April 17 at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus.

In the competition, students were tested on their knowledge of typical and atypical animal behavior as well as their understanding of approved animal care standards and practices. Students observed five different species of animals and answered questions over their behaviors then evaluated and presented a review of animal welfare compliance for two poultry farms and a power point presentation over the behavior of domesticated sugar gliders.

The students who participated included: Jessie Proehl, Nicole Jordan, Amber Ginter and Kasandra Dalton. All four students have a strong interest in animal science and this contest helped them to further their understanding of animals and their normal behaviors.

The team received a fourth place finish in the state competition and will be recognized with a banner from the Ohio FFA Association.

After the competition was finished the group toured the James Herriot memorial veterinary hospital in German Village before returning to Zane Trace.

WATERFORD, Ohio — The Waterford FFA chapter hosted and celebrated its annual parent-member banquet with local farmers, honorary and alumni members, administrators and family April 17.

The chapter awarded 16 Greenhand degrees. Those receiving the Greenhand degrees included Andrew Bauerbach, Eric Flowers, Michael Fox, Blake Heiss, Cierra Heiss, Jacob Kelly, Joe Pugh, David Schaad, Chelsey Streight, Emma Tornes, Garrett Tornes, John Tucker, Brandon Tullis, Megan Whalin, Hunter Wunderlich and Colten McCutcheon.

Whalin also received the Star Greenhand Award.

The chapter also awarded nine chapter degrees. Those receiving the chapter degrees included Allison Adams, Blake Campbell, Breanna Grahame, Sam Hall, Austin Heiss, Levi Heiss, Shane Kern, Alex Offenberger and Devon Patterson.

Allison Adams and Blake Campbell received the outstanding second year member award.

The outstanding third year award was presented to Jessica Coulter and the Star Chapter Farmer Award was presented to Megan Giffin, Katrina Ford and James Whalin.

Allen Angle, WHS alumni president, presented the Ed Barnett Memorial Award to Autumn Hendershot and the WHS FFA Alumni WLC scholarship to Jessica Coulter.

Francis Tornes, Waterford Grange Master, presented the Waterford Grange #231 Agricultural Education Grant to Autumn Hendershot.

Megan Giffin and James Whalin were recognized for receiving their State FFA Degrees. Three honorary members where also installed: Roger French, Kelly Miller and Robert Tornes.

Six FFA members where also awarded scholarships to attend FFA Camp Muskingum this summer. They included Jessica Coulter, Blake Heiss, Emma Tornes, John Tucker, Chelsey Streight and Megan Whalin.

Blake Campbell and Megan Whalin were awarded scholarships to attend the Washington Leadership Conference (WLC) this summer.

Officers installed included: Blake Campbell, president; Megan Whalin, vice-president; Allison Adams, secretary; Megan Giffin, treasurer; Jessica Coulter, reporter; John Tucker, sentinel; and Katrina Ford, student adviser.

WELLINGTON, Ohio — The Wellington FFA chapter has been very busy the last few months.

The latest project was making fleece tie blankets which were given to St. Joe’s Homeless Shelter and Neighborhood House Association, both in Lorain.

ALLIANCE, Ohio — Marlington welcomed 22 teachers and more than 60 students from across its FFA district to the agricultural and horticultural departments April 19.

The teachers met in the agricultural education classroom to discuss upcoming events for the 2012-2013 school year.

Kevin Williams, of the Ohio Department of Education, was on hand to highlight upcoming curriculum changes. Two student delegates from each of the schools in the district were responsible for listening to two candidates for Ohio FFA State Office positions.

The students placed their votes and the results will be announced the first week of May at the FFA State Convention.

At the conclusion of the meetings, the teachers and the students gathered at the new pavilion, which was recently completed by the Marlington Horticultural Programs near the Horticultural Center.
