80 years ago this week.

Ensign Baird of Canfield, who has been breeding Shorthorns for nearly 30 years, sold 30 head of Shorthorn cattle at his farm. The top price, $375, was paid by Carpenter & Ross of Mansfield for the 5-year-old cow, Athelstane Rosemary 528132.

On June 22-23, Trumbull County wool growers consigned a record 30,000 pounds of wool to the Ohio Wool Growers’ warehouse in South Columbus. Two carloads of about 15,000 pounds each were loaded. Prices ranged from 24 cents for the low grades to 37 cents for fine wool.

50 years ago this week.

Eighty-five 4-H clubs in Columbiana County will be represented in safety talks this year. Each of six districts will have its own contest prior to the county-wide elimination on July 25. Contestants either may speak on safety projects or describe measures that have been taken to prevent farm and home accidents. The county contest will be at the Lisbon Grange as part of the junior leadership meeting, with the district contest to be held in Warren. These winners will go to Columbus for the state finals.

25 years ago this week.

Worst hit of all are the agriculture and livestock regions of Britain and northwestern France, where parched landscapes have taken on a yellow, dusty coloring in the practically rainless past weeks. Statistics show Britain has just suffered its driest year since 1727, and the drought in France is described as the worst since 1725 with only a third of the normal rainfall.
