As the region continues to experience one of the coldest, snowiest winters in recent years, growers and producers can take measures to ensure their safety in increasingly hazardous outdoor conditions.

U.S. propane inventories are nearly 44 percent lower than a year ago, and, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average U.S. price for propane hit a record two weeks ago, up $1.05 to $4.01 a gallon. The propane supply is rebounding, but it is going to cost consumers.

Ohio Pork Producers Council President Duane Stateler, McComb, Ohio, said when the propane shortage was tightest, he lowered the temperature in his barns a few degrees and began to use heat lamps again in the sow nursery and two finishing barns at his hog operation.

As of Jan. 1, there were 9,500 milk goats in Ohio, unchanged from a year earlier. The Ohio meat and other goat inventory was 60,000 head, 2,000 below the Jan. 1, 2013, count.

Nationally, all cattle and calves in the United States as of Jan. 1 totaled 87.7 million head, 2 percent below the 89.3 million on Jan. 1, 2013.
