Hazard a Guess for Feb. 4, 2016

Hello from Hazard!
Tom Gill, of Canton, Ohio, writes on Item No. 1044: “If it’s not a boot dryer, it should be.” Well, Tom, it indeed is a boot dryer, so chalk one up to your ingenuity. Ralph Farnsworth, of New Haven, Vermont, submitted the item, and says it sat on a wood stove.

We’ll dip into another one of the photos that Farnsworth sent us for Item No. 1045 (and he’s only “hazarding” a guess as to its use, so we’re hoping readers can help out. The two half-circle, or dome, ends are solid iron (they are not hollowed out, but both have a flat surface). What do you think it is?

  1. Boot dryer. My grandfather had one . Place your leather boots over the cone shape with the elbows ends pointing into the toes of the boots. Set the platform on top of any heat source and the heat will radiant up and into the boot. It even made a nice boot warmer in the morning so your not putting on cold boots .
