I should have known better.
Did I really think the Humane Society of the United States would leave Ohio farmers alone after voters spoke soundly at the polls in favor of a livestock care standards board? Did I really think Wayne Pacelle, HSUS CEO, would admit defeat and simply turn his attention and money to a weaker farm state?
No, I guess not, and so, ready or not, here they come.
The Humane Society of the United States, I remind you, is NOT affiliated with local or county humane societies that shelter unwanted pets, or promote spay and neuter programs. It has a stated goal, one of its Three Rs, of “replacing meat and other animal-based foods in the diet with plant-based foods.” In other words, the “humane” in HSUS means the activists believe there is no “humane” treatment of meat-producing animals. Period.
Unhappy with the outcome of Ohio’s Issue 2, HSUS’ Pacelle has declared the group will wage its own ballot initiative in the Buckeye State, saying the livestock care standards board was “cooked up” to block real reform (meaning the HSUS’ definition of reform).
He said details are forthcoming, and called on Ohioans to help gather the 400,000 valid signatures required to get the issue back on the ballot. And he’ll probably want your money, too, saying “we’ll need a major effort to reach voters in Ohio with our message of sound science and basic values.”
Like the old song goes, “People get ready.”
Get ready for lots of TV ads that show images of abused farm animals as if it was a common scene on your farm.
Get ready for celebrities to lend their voices to the HSUS cause here in Ohio. (Some of us are old enough to remember Meryl Streep and Alar in 1989, or Oprah and her beef brouhaha in 1996.)
Get ready for a targeted message to urban residents, who are likely to know the least about today’s agriculture and livestock production.
Get ready to hear the phrase “factory farm” leveled at your family farm.
Patti Strand, director of the National Animal Interest Alliance, calls it “Defamation for Dollars,” and says HSUS is not above deceiving the public into voting away the welfare of animals.
HSUS is saying “forget the board consensus, we know what’s best for Ohio consumers and farmers.” If you believe that, I’ve got some ocean-front property in Columbiana County, Ohio, I’d like you to see.
If you were part of the silent majority who quietly supported Issue 2, you’re going to have to stretch your comfort zone and share your story. Practice explaining why you do what you do in 60 second or less — your own mini sound-bite, if you will. Think about how your story would sound to someone who knows nothing about farming.
The next 12 months will be critical for Ohio agriculture. We need to get the legislation for the new board; we need to seat the new board, and the new board needs to kick it into gear with meaningful dialogue with all sides.
We also need to get ready for the coming HSUS battle. Their war chest is deep and their p.r. machine is slick. Issue 2 was a cake walk compared to what’s coming.

Susan you are right on target. The Ohioians will have to let their government officials know also, as we all know Wayne has many friends in Washington who still believe his conglomerate is an animal welfare organization. As it turns out the latest HSUS propaganda regarding the cow farm and the new video, mmmmm…..seems the person accused was given suggestions of what to do by the man behind the camera! No excuse but that is the way HSUS works. 400,000 signatures will probably be no problem in Ohio because each one of their unpaid foot sholdiers will probably sign 50 times each. I would think the Attorney General may like to have a look inside of HSUS and their many companies that fall under HSUS. It is amazing at what a conglomerate they have built from donations from people thinking they were somehow saving animals. Not to mention property left to them in people’s wills. Keep up the fight Ohio, importing meat from a third world country does not sound very safe to me…..but that will last until HSUS proposes a bill to stop that!

Apparently, the way the democratic process is set up in the United States is not god enough for HSUS or their legions of “veg-heads”. The legislature, thereby the people who elected them, have spoken. Who does HSUS and Wayne Pacelle think they are? They are merely a money making business, wrapping themselves in the language of animal welfare while pushing their own special interest agenda. People and elected officials of Ohio, wake up!!

Weren’t we all told that by passing Issue 2 that we won’t have to worry about a fight? “Pass Issue 2 to protect us from HSUS!”
Unfortunately, that is not the case. Ohio has voted away the farmer’s freedom. Issue 2, while not protecting protecting us from the animal activists, puts major agricultural decisions into the hands of bureaucrats.
HSUS put only lip service to opposing Issue 2 (how many “non-hand painted” opposition signs did you see?). I hate to see what will happen when they start using their full resources to accomplish their goals.
There is an amazing parallel between animal rights organizations (such as HSUS, PETA, and all their other little offshoots)and our present federal administration. They are not who they say they are, and even their own people are unaware of underlying, subversive goals; blindly executing the bidding of their leader.

I find it interesting that this very Farm and Dairy online magazine shows the “Animal Cruelty Commercial” on this page, and asks for help in Saving Animals Now. RIGHT; donations do NOT go to save animals. And, Farm and Dairy should not be accepting ads from these terrorists.
Paranoia? How about the truth! HSUS does so little for those sentient beings you claim to care so much about. How about using those millions they fraudulently obtain by deceptive advertising to actually DO something to help animals? How about the HSUS focusing more on helping animals than whoring for the media? The people who are actually doing something to help animals are those in the trenches, caring for these animals on a day to day basis and NOT just when the TV cameras are rolling.

Hsus is not only against farm animals for meat and ownership of horses etc. They are also behind the legislation of pet ownership. They are not for the humane treatment of animals really they would rather there be no animals to deal with. A farmer would have no need for cows if they are not for milk or meat production. They would make expensive and useless pets. They would have no purpose. My husband always loves selling a calf to market. He says “well, that makes room for one more.”

Anne’s response is typical coming from someone who assumes that because you eat meat or own a pet you are an abuser. These people want to deny their biology of being an omnivore and care even less about your rights. The lion does not consider anything other than its own needs when killing a gazelle. As human beings we require the nutrients found in meat and others nutrietents we don’t even know about. We are seeing profound and irreparable damage to the internal organs of long term strict vegan dieters. Pregnant women and children should not eat a strict vegan diet as it will cause brain damage and severe problems later in life. Also 1 out of every five adults cannot get protein from plant material. A vegan diet is not good for most people. Moderation is the key to health, but so are the nutrients found in meat. To garner support for their views on animals vegan and animal rights zealots keep pushing the notion that livestock contribute to global warming. They lie about the EPA studies. Methane gas is only 7.9% of all green house gases. Livestock contribute only 17% of this 7.9% total contribution to green house gases. However, soy bean production, rice paddies, wetlands and tropical rainforrests contribute nearly 50% of all methane production. Focusing on methane gas which is only 7.9% of all green house gases takes the focus away from fossel fuels. Soy bean production in Brazil is growing mile after mile with slash and burn farming methods. This bean has to be transported around the world and processed. The carbon footprint of the foreign soybean is far greater than all of the livestock being raised. Misleading the public on health issues is of far more concern and should be considered a terrorist act. HSUS put out that the virus H1N1 came from pork which was a lie completely disputed by CDC. This was done to hurt pork farming and put people off eating meat. These lies are intended to hurt not only farming, but our national food supply. Anne tells us to evolve already not realizing that biology has evolved this collaboration between species to ensure the survival of both species. We have spent years and millions of dollars trying to prevent the tiger from becoming extinct, whereas, once we made the buffalo part of our food chain its survival as a species became assured. This concept of sentient beings is not part of the biology of animals. They eat other animals as do we so the argument that as human beings we should not eat meat is anti human. It is also anti animal as those species will die off or starve to death. Anne represents extreme and faulty thinking similar to those who blindly followed Jim Jones to their deaths. Yes, she can go several years eating vegan before her internal organs begin suffer if she is extremely careful to include the necessary amino acids found only in meat. But she must realize that she is still eating meat when she pops those pills. To condem society for eating meat is to condem all sentient beings on this earth who eat another sentient being. It is the natural way that mother earth has balanced out the species for the survival of all species. Our duty is to keep our food supply safe and to use humane methods in processing our food as much as possible. However, our first duty as a species is to our own survival and we cannot go against our own biological needs and survive as a species. We have developed symbiotic relationships with other species for research purposes that benefit us as well as them. To not do such research again would be against our own best interests, as well as, those of other species who benefit from this research. Anne uses the word exploit which actually means turn to practical account and that is what our nation’s farmers do when raising the food we eat. We should be thankful that they do as it is not an easy job to keep billions of people fed around the world. But farmers do not exploit their animals, what they do is care for them until they serve the higher purpose of feeding humans as ordained not only by God, but by mother nature herself or just biology if you will. When a human being evolves fully that does not need all the nutrients found in meat only then can we carry out such evolution. However, for as many years as vegan diets have been tauted we still do not see any wide spread change in the developmental needs of the human body. Omnivore means you need some of both not just one or the other. As cults go this one is sneaky as it plays upon our misplaced human emotions for pets which we have come to look upon as family and not animal. Remember the first thing a cult does is to control what you eat and to limit your food intake and especially your protein as that is what the brains needs to function effectively and sanely.
Excellent information, Dr. Rosset. I have been following the HSUS for years, since they are such a threat to our rights and abilities to keep our dogs. It is unbelievable that this organization has bamboozles so many people into donating to an organization that is not about helping animals, but about aboloshing them! They don’t give a damn about animals or humans. They just want to make more money, buy more lobbyists. It’s all about power and money, nothing else! Pacelle is a hypocrite, pretending he loves our pets but having never owned one he has no clue what it is like to have one. The HSUS is a emotion based fanatic group, they try to get laws passed in states with voter initiatives so they can snowball people who are unfamiliar with farming. What they want to do in Ohio will force the production of eggs, pork and veal to move to another state.These farming operations know how to take care of their animals alot better than the HSUS, if not they would be out of business. Many people in California are losing their jobs and businesses due to the HSUS, all because the HSUS came up with some idea and put it on the ballot.Ohio will not let them do this.
What needs to be down is to establish the fact that animals ARE private property in court. If this can be established then outsiders and bunny huggers will have no right to tell individuals what to do with with their property. Think tail docking, castaration, spay/nuter all these and many more are choices people make on their own possesions. Establish firm legality that animals are property/possesions and they have no right to stick their nose in it.
The HSUS has perpetuated the biggest fraud upon the American people that this nation has ever seen. Most of their yearly budgeted millions of dollars goes towards legislation that fit into two main categories. Those two categories (1) make it more and more expensive to own animals (2) make it more and more difficult to own animals.
A little research into their practices and in the obvious direction they want to take animal ownership is all that’s needed to see the truth about them. Unfortunately they approach their goals in such a devious way as to gain credibility with all but the most informed on animal welfare vs animal rights. As well, much of their credibility comes from an ignorant press. Now we have a President who apparently also believes the animal rights rhetoric — such as what his Regulatory Czar, Cass Sunstein spouts.
It all is very frightening and sickening that so many can be deceived.

It is gratifying to see so many posters in the know about HSUS. This group doesn’t run a single animal shelter. It doesn’t support any low cost vet clinics to reach the poor. And it doesn’t provide funds to offer free spay/neuters to people who cannot afford that surgery for their pets. Of the $100 million taken in each year, $96 million is spent on advertising and lobbying and providing big salaries for execs like Wayne Pacelle. He himself stated that their goal was to eliminate all domesticated animals within one human generation. HSUS along with PETA have this as a stated goal. Just read deep enough into their web sites.
In PETA’s case, they do run a shelter in VA and it kills 97% of the animals turned in. Better dead than a pet, I guess. This number is easy to verify as it is public record in the state of Virginia. And remember the case where PETA people picked up unwanted pets, drove around the corner and killed them, then dumped the bodies into dumpsters behind stores. They were found guilty but of a silly misdemeanor charge. This is also verifiable.
I wonder if any of their members/supporters of HSUS and PETA got flu shots this year–you know the vaccine grown in chicken eggs. Have all the vegans who have posted heregotten theirs?

And that folks is the people behind the animal rights movement that so many think are asking for donations to help the animals. Do these sound like sane people who want animal welfare? Or do they sound more like people who detest the human race as a whole?
We farmers all know what HSUS and PETA are and their agenda. Owner is correct. Sadly, Farm Bureau and the other groups that hastily put together Issue 2 did not seek any other opinions from ony of their members-many of us wanted to put a “Farmers Rights” Bill on instead of a Bill that took our rights away. Sadly, that is water- under-the-bridge and now we must still deal with these animal rights terrorists.
First of all, we need to educate the public on what MOST of you have said above-They need to know HSUS supports terrorism (Wayne Pacelle, the head of HSUS was taped stating this) Hopefully Farm Bureau et.all. will intelligently ask for suggestions this time. Some from me would include:
1. Band together with ALL states HSUS is/has attacked and take our matter to the US Supreme court on grounds of unconstitutionality.
2. At same time, create Farmers’ Rights Bill on National level.
3. Also at same time, start planning a future National (International would be best-as they all face similar problems) Food Strike. This may seem extemely radical-but it is no different than the tactics HSUS is doing to us, besides,the mere thought of a food strike may bring people to their senses.
4. Then start on our state-bombard info. to all people by all media available.
5. Include various groups as allies such as Hunters, NRA, Unions, ect.
Unlike Issue 2, all of us farmers should be involved-this will be MAKING SURE our constitutional rights are preserved, no matter what size or type of farm you have(That includes organic and small-such as myself,..remember, HSUS’s goal is to eradicate ALL animal control)

What I find so sad is the fact these folks writing these articles have no idea of what has been foisted on the neighbors by owners not living on the farm and taking full advantage of the lack of interest by other so called farmers.
I am shocked that an editor such as Susan cannot see this and in trying to help the farmers in Ohio would not like to see the changes I have asked for for so many years, ie. a two tier system of animal industry, no zoning abatements and taxed on their sales as any other industry is. It would be a solution but one that Farm Bureau fails to promote. Why is that when many other states such as Wisconsin where I moved from 32 years ago enacted.

I and many others having been trying to get through to the mainstream media those very points, but in my own experience so far, the AR extremists have them completely bamboozled. here’s a quote from one of my local television anchors when I tried to speak to him about it recently:

How do you get through to the media when this is their belief? Because they believe this way, they continue to encourage the public to believe it also. Most of the media familiar with animal husbandry DOES understand the agenda, but we also need to find a way to get mainstream media, our legislators, and the public to understand it as well, or as Colleen Michaels said above, “God help us all!”

endorsed Issue 2 and issued an excellent press release praising its passage. Maybe American Humane could play a backround role in the development/review of humane farming practices in Ohio – not serving on the board, but in an unpaid, consulting capacity. At the very least, it would enrage Pacelle and company, who have worked hard over the years to undermine the work and fundraising of its rivals, especially American Humane, the ASPCA and Best Friends Animal Society.
