HILLSDALE, Pa. –On Feb. 9, members of the Hillsdale FFA Chapter had members compete at the sub-district various public speaking contests.

Melanie Graven participated in the creed speaking contest. The purpose of the FFA creed speaking contest is to develop the ability of beginning FFA members to demonstrate their interpretation and self-expression of the FFA Creed. Melanie placed fourth in the contest.

McKenzie Stimmell placed first in the senior prepared public speaking contest. The purpose of the prepared public speaking CDE is to develop agricultural leadership by providing an opportunity for member participation in agricultural public speaking activities.

Sarah Bookman competed in the extemporaneous public speaking contest. Contestants will select one topic from each of the three categories. They will then choose one of the three topics on which they will prepare their speech.

The contestant must present the judges with the topic of their speech before beginning their presentation. Members placing first will have the opportunity to compete at the district level in March.

WEST SALEM, Ohio — Northwestern’s FFA Chapter complete fundraisers in order to receive the funds necessary for all of our activities. After a successful citrus fruit sale last fall, this spring’s strawberry and sausage sale is looking good.

The strawberries are fresh from Florida. The deadline for orders is March 4 and the berries will be delivered the week of March 21. Full flats of 12 pints (11 pounds) sells for $20 and flats of 6 pints (5 1/2 pounds) are $11 each.

Our whole hog sausage sale runs until Feb. 25. Our chapter actually makes this sausage on March 5 in cooperation with Heffelfinger Meats, and delivery is the same day. Sausage is fresh and is sold in 5 pound bulk bags. Each bag is $14 and can be bought as non-spiced or as slightly spiced (salt and pepper).

If you would like to order either strawberries or sausage, please call the ag. department at 419-846-3384, ext. 1317.
