Reader says gestation crates provide safety

Editor:
I read your article on gestation crates. My question is: Has anyone from the Humane Society of the United States ever been around sows delivering piglets?

The reason for the gestation crates is for the safety of the piglets and the safety of the herdsman. We are talking about an animal who weighs anywhere from 300 to 1,000 pounds — with lots of teeth and jaw pressure to break bones.

Maybe some of the hog farmers who farrow sows should call a CEO of the Humane Society of the United States the next time they are delivering stubborn piglets. Let them get into the humane pens.

After a few of them have gotten chewed or eaten they will be less likely to place the piglets and the handlers in a less than humane position.
