SMITHVILLE, Ohio — The Smithville FFA competed in the Career Development Event soil judging contest Oct. 10. The rural team consisting of Wayne Stoller, Samantha Steiner, Alex Massaro and Miriam Gochnauer competed at the state level after going through county, and districts then finally state.

The contest was held at Wilmington Collage and the members competed against a total of 50 rural teams and about 192 people total, and there where 50 urban teams and about 192 for urban also.

The rural team placed 20th overall. Wayne placed seventh individually and Samantha placed 90th, Alex placed 136th and Miriam placed 157th.

The urban team consisting of Marie Arnold and Paul Kelbly placed 50th as a team and individually Marie placed 93rd and Paul placed 73rd.

The group is currently running its annual fruit sales. Members will be selling fruit, cheese, meat, nuts, and barbecue sauce.

On Oct. 13, Smithville FFA held its meeting at the farm of Daryl and Connie Hartzler.

The FFA officers conducted the business portion of the meeting and passed the motions to provide financial support to members attending National FFA Convention, hold the annual Veterans Day Program with a breakfast Nov. 11.

Committee meetings were held and plans are being made for an eventful year. Officers gave monthly reports of what is going on.

INDIANAPOLIS — Travis Arnold received the American FFA Degree at the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis Oct. 14.

Arnold, the son of Aaron and Katy, is a 2008 graduate of Smithville High School and is currently a student at The Ohio State University. He is a member of the Smithville FFA chapter and his agricultural education instructor and FFA adviser is Tony Stoller.

Arnold received a gold American FFA Degree key and a certificate in a blue leatherette frame to commemorate the achievement.

ASHLAND, Ohio — On Oct. 24, Alyssa Christian, a member of the Mapleton FFA, received her American FFA Degree. The American Degree is the most prestigious degree one can receive as an FFA member.

Christian has received this award for her leadership and all the hard work she put into her SAE project.

Christian met the American Degree requirements and was honored at the 82nd National Convention in Indianapolis. Her adviser is Charlie Warthling.

INDIANAPOLIS — Paul Snyder of the Minerva FFA chapter received the American FFA Degree at the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis Oct. 24.

The degree recognizes Paul’s demonstrated leadership abilities and outstanding achievements in agricultural business, production, processing and service programs.

Snyder, the son of Joel and Vanessa Snyder, is currently a junior at the Kent State University Salem Campus, where he is studying horticulture. His agricultural education instructor and FFA adviser is Jamie Glavan.

Snyder received a gold American FFA Degree key and a certificate in a blue leatherette frame to commemorate the achievement.

ALBANY, Ohio — Brent Kasler, son of Jill and Rich Kasler of Athens, Ohio, received the American FFA Degree at the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis Oct. 24.

Kasler attended Alexander High School and was very active in the Alexander FFA chapter. The American Degree is the highest degree awarded by the National FFA Organizations and recognizes.

Kasler demonstrated leadership abilities and outstanding achievements in agriculture business, production, processing and service programs.

Kasler received a gold American FFA Degree key and a certificate in a blue leatherette frame to commemorate his achievement.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Southern Local FFA chapter attended the 82nd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis Oct. 21-24.

FFA members attending the convention included Brandon Kastor, Jimmie David, J.J. Pahanish, Shanna Rankin, Taylor Stevens, Tiffany Melott, chapter secretary Nathan Birkhimer, chapter vice president Jacob Smith and American Degree recipient Allen Miller.

Miller received the American FFA Degree at the Convention Oct. 24. The American Degree is the highest degree that the FFA association can award. It recognizes leadership and outstanding achievements in FFA.

Miller is the son of Christine Miller of Salineville. He currently attends Pittsburgh Technical Institute, majoring in home and commercial systems integration.

Miller is a six-year member of the Southern Local FFA Chapter and served as chapter president, was recognized as the Star Chapter Farmer and received the State FFA Degree in 2008.
