High-tech tracker to share findings of coyote survey

Wondering which hunting activities top the most popular list? That’s easy. Whitetail deer, wild turkey, and coyote.

Coyote hunting

Well, ranking coyote hunting even close to the top of the chart may be a stretch, but it’s no secret that the interest in hunting coyotes and coyote hunting is growing in leaps and bounds.

Thus knowing all about coyote behavior and all that is wild canine, is also of growing interest. Sure, attending seminars focusing on the hunt is one way to learn and so is pure experience in the field but there are other ways as well.

Coyote study

Here’s one: Graduate University of Akron student Beth Wallace will present the results of a study she has worked on by collaring coyotes in the Cuyahoga Valley Area and tracking their movements.

Titled the Northeast Ohio Radio Collared Coyote study for obvious reasons, the study data should provide distances traveled on hunting forays as well as denning preferences and other habits shared by these secretive predators.

Some knowledgeable coyote hunters espouse to the idea that coyotes tend to hunt very large areas likening their movements to a circuit of several miles taking several days to cover while other hunters tend to think coyotes are more oriented to one location and den. It will be interesting to hear what Wallace has to report.

The coyote study presentation will be held at the Suffield Fire Department Community Room located at the intersection of state Route 43 and Waterloo Road beginning April 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Annual dinner

Another upcoming Suffield, Ohio event is the annual Fur Takers Chapter 8 dinner and auction to be held at the Suffield Town Hall beginning April 14 at 4 p.m.

Disabled shooters

Disabled shooters will compete for national recognition April 19 and April 20 at the Vienna Fish and Game Club, near Warren, Ohio.

Shooters will all be performing from wheelchairs while shooting precision air pistols and rifles.

The event represents some of the top marksmen from the region and will host not only the competitors but top names in the sport such as two time U.S. Paralympic Shooting Team coach Bob Robertson and Wheelchair Sports USA Hall of Fame member and founder of the National Rifle Association’s Disabled Shooting Services Department, Dave Baskin.

This event is recognized nationally and supported by several shooting organizations.
