Educational meetings set in February and March for beef producers

MARYSVILLE, Ohio — As a service to its membership, the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association in part with the OCA Allied Industry Council is holding a series of district meetings across Ohio during the months of February and March. Anyone with an interest in the cattle industry is invited to attend. The meetings will begin between 6:30 and 7 p.m., with a complimentary dinner followed by educational speakers.

Schedule

Meeting locations and topics for 2011 include:

Feb. 24 — OCA District 7 meeting (Counties: Belmont, Carroll, Guernsey, Harrison, Jefferson, Monroe, Noble and Tuscarawas), 7 p.m., Jefferson County Joint Vocational School, 1509 County Road 22a, Bloomingdale, OH 43910. Eastern Beef Management School speakers: Mike Day, OSU Dept. of Animal Sciences; Keith Burgett, Carrollton Animal Hospital. Topic: Making artificial insemination work when using CIDR’s, preventing calf scours in your beef operation.

March 3 — OCA District 10 meeting (Counties: Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Preble and Warren), 6:30 p.m., Butler County Extension office, 1802 Princeton Road, Hamilton, OH 45011. Speakers: Dan Frobose, OSU Extension; Henry Zerby, OSU Dept. of Animal Sciences. Topic: Special ways of marketing your cattle, ways in which you could get audited.

March 8 — OCA District 1 & 2 meeting (Counties: Crawford, Defiance, Erie, Fulton, Hancock, Henry, Huron, Lucas, Ottawa, Paulding, Putnam, Richland, Sandusky, Seneca, Van Wert, Williams, Wood and Wyandot), 7 p.m., Shell Shuckers, 1927 South state Route 53, Tiffin, OH 44883. Speaker: Sam Roberts, United Producers Inc. Topic: Marketing fat cattle and buying feeder calves.

March 10 — OCA District 3 meeting (Counties: Ashtabula, Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Mahoning, Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit and Trumbull), 7 p.m., Millcreek Metroparks Farm, McMahon Hall, 7574 state Route 46 Canfield, OH 44406. Speaker: Jeff McCutcheon, OSU Extension. Topic: What does it cost to keep a cow?

March 24 — OCA District 5 & 8 meeting (Counties: Champaign, Clark, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hardin, Logan, Madison, Marion, Morrow, Pickaway and Union), 6: p.m., Champaign County Community Center, 1512 South U.S. Rt. 68, Urbana, OH 43078. Speakers: John Grimes, OSU Extension. Topics: Ohio Livestock Care and Standards Board update & cattle price outlook.

March 28 — OCA District 9 meeting (Counties: Fairfield, Hocking, Licking, Muskingum and Perry), 7 p.m., Muskingum Livestock Company, 944 Malinda St., Zanesville, OH 43701. Speaker: Stacey Atherton , Livestock Care and Standards Board committee member. Topics: Livestock Care and Standards Board update and discussion.

March 30 — OCA District 7 meeting (Counties: Belmont, Carroll, Guernsey, Harrison, Jefferson, Monroe, Noble and Tuscarawas), 6:30 p.m., Mr. Lee’s Restaurant, 2000 East Wheeling Ave., Cambridge, OH 43725. Speakers: Cliff Litter, OSU Extension; John Grimes, OSU Extension. Topic: Spotted knapweed, cattle price outlook.

March 30 — OCA District 11 meeting (Counties: Adams, Brown, Highland, Pike, Ross and Scioto), 7 p.m., Southern States Community College — Fincastle, 12681 U.S. Rt. 62, Sardinia, OH 45171. Speaker: Bill Moody, Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board Member. Topic: Ohio Livestock Care and Standards Board update and discussion.
