A roundup of FFA news for the week of Oct. 4, 2012:


CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — Zane Trace FFA officers and their adviser, Jennifer Johnston, traveled to Columbus Sept. 26 to hear Gov. John Kasich speak, tour the statehouse, and meet with Sen. Bob Peterson.

The day started with a tour of the statehouse, where the group learned all about the history of Ohio’s statehouse, and was able to see both chambers. The group also had the unique opportunity to view an informal meeting of some of the members of the Ohio House of Representatives.

Their statehouse tour ended outside of Sen. Bob Peterson’s office, and they had a talk with Peterson, who spoke about the importance of knowing your legislators and being involved in the political process. He also shared some personal stories with the group, and took them through an average day in the life of an Ohio Senator.

From there, the officers listened to a speech by Gov. Kasich. He spoke of the importance of perusing career in which you are very passionate about, and shared with many FFA members his own thoughts on the importance of agriculture.

MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta FFA rural soil judging team competed at the Washington County Soil Judging Competition Sept. 21, and then competed at the District 10 Soil Judging Competition Sept. 25.

Team members are Brittany Baker, Shania Baker, Allison Robinson, and Jonathan Wood.

At the county competition, the team placed third out of five teams. At the district competition, the team took second place out of 18 teams.

Individually, Brittany Baker placed sixth; Wood placed ninth; Shania Baker placed 10th; and Robinson placed 18th out of 77 individuals.

The team will now travel to the state soil judging competition Oct. 13 at Malabar Farm in Richland County. Only the top five teams from each district go to the state contest.

JEROMESVILLE, Ohio — Hillsdale FFA traveled to the Big E exposition in West Springfield, Mass. Sept. 13-15.

This year two teams from Hillsdale competed. The parliamentary procedure CDE team consisted of president Sarah Bookman, secretary Mckenzie Stimmell and members Ashley Cutlip, Stephanie Schuck, Keayla Harr and Dylan Mullins. This year they placed first overall at the Big E Nationals.

In the dairy foods CDE Sarah Bookman placed ninth, and Dylan Mullins placed eighth. Chloe Krebs and Mckenzie Stimmell also competed.

Hillsdale placed fourth overall at the Big E.
