Transistor radio breaks record at auction

Estes Auctions of Medina, Ohio, held a radio auction May 23 at the Expo Auction Center in Burbank, Ohio, for the Ken Zander estate from San Jose, Calif.

More than 200 people were in attendance with buyers from 20 states, including California and New Mexico.

The top-selling item was a Zenith 1936 “Stratosphere” radio for $39,000.

Other top-selling items included a Majestic Park Avenue for $5,000; a McMurdo Silver for $4,100; a Zenith 835 for $2,800; a Scott Napier for $4,000; a Philco bar radio for $3,100; an Australian Astor radio for $1,900; a Zenith 829 for $1,900; a Sparton glass 558 radio for $1,900 and a Zenith chair-side 15S346 radio for $1,800.

Many other radios sold in the $1,000-$2,000 range.

The surprise of the day was a Regency TR-1 transistor radio that was given as a gift by Michael Todd, the movie mogul in the 1950s and 1960s, to Frank Quinn, a movie publicist. The radio set a new record of $8,500. The previous record was $6,800.

Fusco Auctions of Willoughby, Ohio, held a sports card and memorabilia auction May 23.

Highlights of the auction include a Babe Ruth signature cut for $3,100; a Lou Gehrig signature cut for $2,200; a 1933 New York Yankees team roster signature page for $1,950; a game-used George Brett bat for $1,700; a 1910 Cleveland Naps pennant for $1,100, a Tony Lazzeri signature cut for $575 and a LeBron James signed Upper Deck jersey for $575.

– Eugene F. Kiko of Kiko Auctioneers and Realtors, Canton, Ohio, held a real estate auction May 23 in Dellroy, Ohio, with 30 bidders in attendance.

The auction included 67 wooded acres with a rustic cabin, which sold for $218,000.

– Eugene F. Kiko and Joseph F. Gordon of Kiko Auctioneers and Realtors, Canton, Ohio, held an auction May 30 in Medina, Ohio, by the order of Jack Chester, with 200 registered bidders in attendance.

The real estate, which included 50 acres with a home and 8-acre lake, sold for $448,000.

Other highlights included a Springdale travel trailer for $14,500; a John Deere 4400 diesel 4×4 tractor for $10,500; a 2001 Harley Davidson motorcycle for $6,500; a Farmall F-12 tractor for $1,900; a John Deere 242 lawn tractor for $1,100; a 3 pt., 6-foot cutter bar for $1,800 and a Stihl chain saw for $230.

The seller commented that he was surprised by the competitive bidding and prices.
